Re: Reading a Chart in Metres

very funny,Geoff but no,I'd get my deckhand to put their finger in to measure the the dangerous places. No,Moetai has it.India and China are metric and that's where it will go!
Everybody is already wearing cotton/polyester blend and beige will be the only colour on the shelf.

as to charts,I think they should go straight to colour. No numbers are needed.Just compare the darkest tint of your hulls spectrum to the chart's sounded spectrum..

In fact, all measurement of lengths might be as spectrum too.the mathematics would be gone. It'd just be as waveforms combined or cancelled.

But a foot /3=4.

base 10 is not the path to nirvana.

Re: Reading a Chart in Metres

foot, thumb, el(bow) were all in use in Holland too and all were different than the English with similar names. That was the biggest problem: standardization.

Born and raised in metric, I must confess that I use feet and inches regularly now, until I need more precision and go straight to millimeters then.

The biggest trouble are ounces, liquid ounces etc. I just always need an app on iPhone/iPad to deal with those.

cheers,
Nick.

Ultimately, yes.

Standardising measurement systems is not synonymous with stifling freedom of choice in other areas.

I think some charts are like that, at least to some degree. It would be hard to do in a small area with a lot of spot depths though.

I think you mean waveLENGTH and the concept is not new. The wavelength of light generated by fluorescing a particular gas is very constant so I've no doubt that could be used as a standard.

OP's question had nothing to do with him/her being comfortable using metric as system in general. It had to do with the convention of putting a subscript behind a depth marking and what that meant. Fortunately his question was answered the same way 4 times on the first page and he/she was happy with that answer.

Since the first page the thread has drifted off into LaLa Land and not touched on his original question for 4 more pages. Of course this is rather normal for CF and rather entertaining.

Now, now. This is an international forum. Be tolerant.

While you are, of course, absolutely correct, you may not be aware that wavelength in seagullese is waveforms.

My experience has been that the ladies prefer to find out for themselves.

I did say I wasn't going to turn this into a body part size thread didn't I?

Quite right. Put it this way, a meter is something you use to MAKE a measurement, a metre IS a measurement.

I've seen Kilometers v Kilometres from some as well. I'm not sure where it comes from originally, but it's wrong.

Quaint? Perhaps "authentic" might be a more apt descriptor. After all, Lord Nelson was also using sails back then, wasn't he?
