Navigation Challenges - Post Your Craziest Chart and Let’s Talk

I’ll go first. I found a doozy recently.

Haven’t been on the ICW in quite some time, and I sure don’t remember this part.

I was coming from the left side of the screen in this chart.

Tell me your course that you would pick.

See the little pink lines? These are courses you follow the entire way up the ICW. That pink line does not stop the entire trip. It’s continuous. Except right here.

It seems like the cartographer just threw up his hands and said “forget it. You figure it out.”

And if anyone thinks this is just a bad print on an old-fashioned raster chart, here is the Raymarine chart of the same area.

And to make matters worse? The markers that I underlined on this screenshot did not exist. All three of them were not there.

If I didn't know better, I'd say it was in Maine. Because obviously you can't get there from here.
Hmm I think I would have left that brown circle to starboard. I don't like the 2' mark just beyond it, but I really don't like the looks of that 1' mark next to shore.

Ha ha ha. That’s pretty funny about Maine. I could hear the accent.

I didn’t really like the 1’ or the 2’ myself.

I think I'd want to check a satellite view to see if there's an obvious good path that isn't shown on the chart. Otherwise I'd leave the island to starboard as my best guess.

Superb thinking! I hadn’t thought to look at the satellite.

Here it is!

Unfortunately, to me, I think it says “inconclusive” still.

Making matters worse, I went through this at pretty much mean low water.

I’ll share my track later after the discussion. Curious what other people would have done.

If you’re doing the ICW you should download Bob423 tracks and import them into your Navionics and AquaMaps apps. Bob423 ICW Tracks and Routes: Bob423 Long Tracks
These are safe routes that are frequently updated. Updates and closures are announced on Bob423’s Facebook group daily. https://www.facebook.com/groups/ICWCruisingGuide
These are MUCH more reliable than suggested routes on your charts and usually updated faster than the local buoys

Awwww. You’re spoiling all the fun! Ha ha.
People shouldn’t look at that and cheat.

For the record I did not look at any type of skipper Bob thing. I used my instincts. I will show my track and explain my reasoning for it.

Well, I guess that’s a valid response. I did ask what other people would do. In your case you would go ahead and download a bunch of other stuff, join Facebook groups. Stuff like that.

Looking ONLY at the charts you posted I’d follow 90-degree bend near Light 115 at the bottom of the chart. Of course I’d also look at the scene and try to make judgements. It’s also possible the buoy locations don’t match the chart. Edit: when buoys and charts don’t match I usually follow the buoys..

When in doubt, I go wide.

Sometime, I guess right.

I would not aim for the start of the next pink line.. at the green I would hang a left and aim fot the next green and do what I always did on the ICW.. watch my sounder carefully and go with my gut.. something I did hunting subs.
