Mooring buoy recommendations in the Abacos.

Greetings
The forum has helped me tremendously on my first journy to the bahamas and I m greatly thankful for all.

I should be in the abacos around the 7th of December and would like to tie off to a buoy. I read about how they are not well maintained. I found the field by captain jack Restaurant. Any others?

I know I can anchor and it is actually easier as a solo sailer. But I really need a buoy for a month or so.
Thanks

Hope Town: There are many moorings available in the harbor. However there is little organization, as they have been placed by several different local residents. If you don't know the owner* of the mooring, eventually the owner will find you to collect.
The general rule is to pick up one that is unoccupied, and not marked
‘Private’.

In adfition to Captain Jack's

* This is OLD information:
Truman Major; VHF Ch-16, "Lucky Strike"; 242-366-0101, had numerous moorings, marked with double green floats. He services them twice a year, and after storms. Contact for monthly rates. Call on VHF and he will come alongside you, in in the evenings.
Hope Town Inn & Marina. Has a number of rental moorings, marked with two red or two blue floats.
There are also conical mooring floats in the SW corner of the harbor.

If you have to leave the boat by itself for a month or so I would always try to find a fellow cruiser or someone you trust ashore to check on her from time to time. Make it a formal arrangement, possibly with some pay, so they take it seriously. In the past there were sheltered moorings at Man O'War too. In the winter your main weather worries are the occasional cold fronts that sweep through with strong northerly winds, so look for shelter from that direction.
