Jacobs Well ,Kangaroo channel?

Has anybody recently been through the Jacobs Well Broadwater main channel heading from Moreton bay to Southport? Its been 6 years since I've been in this area and there was a specific shallow patch between Kangaroo island and Woogoompah Island. Can a 2.4m draft navigate this section easily enough?

Cheers Dale.

We went down in October and at the time there was a dredge working in that area and at the time i had nothing below 1 mtr below the keel at low-ish tide. We draw 1.1 and never had a problem but 2.4 is probably at the limit of some of the other areas on the trip down as well.

Re: Jacobs Well ,Kangaroo channel?

Dale, we came through there about two weeks ago. They have just finished dredging the skinny bits, and we were pleased to find lots of depth. To wit: at ~ local HW, with 2.1 meters at the Brisbane bar, we had over 14 feet all the way through the former shallows!

A big improvement!

Jim

Re: Jacobs Well ,Kangaroo channel?

Great to hear. I've got to get used to shallow water again, found the mud coming out of Mooloolabah this morning, was trying to creep out early.
Jim, the rest of the route is all good to? I remember when I last did it there seemed to be plenty of water all along except for the jacobs well part.
I've got to get my head around this extra 40cm...lol.

Dale, the rest of the main channel is ok, but one should be going with a rising tide! We try to leave the karagarra area a couple of hours before HW, enjoy the flood as we work southward, and (before dredging) hit jacob's well around HW. It is ~ a half hour later than Brisbane.

Two years ago we encountered a shoal that was not on the charts. We grounded at 27* 42.202' S, 153* 21.645' E. Don't know the extent of the shoal, nor if it is still there. Avoid by going to the W of that location. This position is just past the HT wires... which brings up another point. Official clearance is 20.3 m at HAT and at the lowest point of the catenary. Dunno if that is an issue for your mast.

In general, the practice of leaving marks 50-100 feet clear and then heading for that distance off the next mark works well. The closer you get to Southport, the greater population of true idiots in big Rivieras roaring by you throwing 6 foot waves. They can be a nuisance!.

If you are carrying on soon, the spring tides will be your friend!

Cheers,

Jim

Re: Jacobs Well ,Kangaroo channel?

Great info Jim. Im at Bribie now and will do a short hop to peel tomorrow and head to Southport on Saturday. Yes the tides will work for me.
Power lines I should clear powerlines with a couple of meters to spare.
Thanks.

I've travelled the passage in a 2.1m keeler six times and have always planned to arrive at Jacobs Well half an hour either side of the high. From Manly to Bum's Bay at 5.5kts it's a trip of around nine hours.

Cheers and happy travels

Re: Jacobs Well ,Kangaroo channel?

Yes, did this trip down last year and had very little clearance on the shallow parts with 2.1 keel depth and worked the tides. good to hear the dredge has been through ,not sure what can be done about the idiots in the motor cruisers or the inconsiderate jetski riders. would have to be the worst bit of water on the east coast of Australia for the amount of dickheads

I concur, but Sydney harbour sometimes challenges for the title!

Re: Jacobs Well ,Kangaroo channel?

We went through Tuesday. Rode the tide well and had heaps of water. Sorry I don't know exactly how much in the spot you mean, but never once felt nervy.
( We only draw 1.1 but even so...)
I found with the right timing on the tide we saved heaps of time. Current with us the whole way. I think the crossover is around that area, but locals would give you better info. Happy days

Re: Jacobs Well ,Kangaroo channel?

Travelled through the waterway on Saturday. Was surprised how good the depth was all the way, only rarely saw less than 3.5m. It got a bit thin at the dredged jacobs well bit, 2.8m (10ft) briefly, this was 30mins prior to hw.
