You certainly don't need radar: it is nice to have, but not a necessity. As you are trying to keep things simple, you can legitimately decide to do without.

That said, it is a great collision avoidance tool. Don't let you one bad experience put you off: that set likely wasn't adjusted correctly.

What's the best plotter/finder for the lowest price? It's for a 22' Ranger.
