Re: Best tablet for navionics on sailboat?

I see that these Samsung Active tablets are sold with 5G and WIFI only models. Since both versions have GPS capability, can one get away with just the WIFI version for simple navigation assuming the maps were downloaded ahead of time? What Navionics features would one lose without 5G? (I assume one could also connect to one's phone Hotspot too if real time data was important)

The 5G Ultra Wideband network’s signal can reach up to 1,500 feet without obstructions, hence not of much use on a sailboat during navigation, but useful when at a marina or near a tower along the shore.

I would expect you’ll be using the tablet for more than just navigation, such as watching videos, listening to music, keeping lists and also email / surfing the net when in range.

Consequently, I would suggest using a tablet that meets all of those needs best.
My observation is that either Android or Apple work fine.

I’ve subscribed fully to the Apple ecosystem and hence I use an iPad.
Works well for me, however the major drawback is that I can’t run OpenCPN on it .
Works well with Navionics and I expect most other navigation apps.

If you do go down the iPad path, make sure you get a model with GPS capability!
