Re: Which Ancor Chain

You HAVE to have the chain that matches the windlasses' gypsy. Look for a designation on it, in the paperwork, or do research.

In general, ACCO High Test chain is best. (which IS G-4, btw...). Be sure to go to "Crosby" for their HT 3/8" shackle that matches it's strength! NONE of the others do!

AVOID CHINESE CHAIN & SHACKLES!!!

We went US made Acco G4 5/16 also. If you're ordering it from the factory, suggest you get an oversize link on both ends while you're at it.

Most newer windlass gypsies are designed for hi-test (also called G-4 or Grade 40 chain). Lot of older gypsies are designed for BBB chain. Need to verify with your windlass manufacturer. If a new Maxwell, 90% chance they will spec hi-test chain.

With respect but that is just wrong. G40, G30 and that stuff is all to do with strength as nothing to do with the physical sizing. A winch doesn't give a rats bum how strong your chain is but it gives a huge bum as to what size it is.

Exmoor - The new Maxwells now feature mutli-fit gypsies meaning sizing isn't as critical as it once was or can be on their competitors gypsies. I'm guessing the 5/16" means you are in the US. Any 5/16" short link chain should fit so if talking ACCO you can use the BBB or the HT, it's your call. You could also use a metric 8mm on the same gypsy if you like.

NOTE: As you say 'new Maxwell' I am assuming it's a HRC or a RC series which the above does apply to. If it's a 'new older model' the above may not apply.

The BBB chain is a Grade 30. The HT is a Grade 40. What that effectively means is the HT is 33% stronger than the BBB. The G30 is fine and by far the most common grade in use in the world today.... but it is morphing to G40 as boats get bigger and all that stuff.

If you don't use Acco make sure you do know what you are buying as the chances are it'll be 'Asian' and it's well know that will rust fast so while it can be cheaper (should be a lot cheaper than Acco made) to buy it is sort of false economy. Ask for a Test Certificate and that, assuming it's a real one, will list everything you need to know about that chain inc where it is made.

Part number G-209a (not G-209) just for completeness. Can be sourced at your local industrial rigging company typically.
