Re: Help with Simpson Lawrence 555 Windlass with CHAIN, Not Gear!
New to the forum and not sure if this is how you follow up on an old posting, but.....
I'm trying to contact cburger who seems to be the SL 555 chain-driven guru. We just opened ours up and discovered we have a chain model, not the geared one. We have removed the base and gasket, gypsy and rope drum. Not sure how to proceed. Cburger, Can you assist with pix to help us take apart and reassemble? Many thanks.

Not sure if I want the responsability of being a guru. However, I've looked to see if I still have the rebuild pictures for the Hyspeed and am sorry to say I no longer have them. I tried to find what members I had sent copies to, also to no avail.

Re: Help with Simpson Lawrence 555 Windlass with CHAIN, Not Gear!
I've got my S-L Seatiger disassembled, cleaned and ready for re-assembly, but have two questions for anyone who may have done this before or maybe just knows the answers:
1) What grease do I use for the grears?
2) Do I completely fill the gear housing with grease? I'm told I do by some but it was empty when I opened it. Of course it was all rusted up so that maybe be why.
Tks

Re: Help with Simpson Lawrence 555 Windlass with CHAIN, Not Gear !
I don't know what was recommended by Simpson Lawrence, but when I got it, my 555 had what appeared to be 90-weight gear lube in it. There is a fill hole on the side of the case on the stbd side aft (visible in attached photo) and I think the lube should be added until it is at the height of the port...this will keep the oil level just below the height of the lowest bearing.

Re: Help with Simpson Lawrence 555 Windlass with CHAIN, Not Gear !
hi all,
i recently picked up a 555 that has what looks to be a filler cap on one side. at points i've noticed gear oil leaking from the rubber seals. could these two things be related? like a seatiger that carries oil in it's body as opposed to grease? there is the grease nipple on the main shaft but as the gasket plate is firmly siliconed in place and the unit turns so smoothly i'm hesitant to tear it open to see what's going on inside. thoughts? thanks in advance -r

Re: Help with Simpson Lawrence 555 Windlass with CHAIN, Not Gear !
The axles have O-rings. On my 555 the O-rings were old and tired, and all of them leaked. I was able to find replacements at an autoparts store. So far, the new O-rings have not leaked.

I purchased some bushings, the spring pin, bottom gasket and grease fitting from the S&L dealer in England and they fit perfectly.
It would be interesting to hear from anyone else who has one like this - and their serial number (stamped on the base where the chain feeds below deck)

Hi Bob,
I know this is an old post, but I am hoping for a little help. I have the same, a chain driven Seatiger 555, and your post is the first online mention I have come across. I broke one of the inside chains, and therefore I am disassembling the windlass to reinstall a fixed chain. Do you have more photos, or perhaps a manual?
Mine has serial number 138.
Best regards, Signe
