hi my name is david have a 9.9 mercury outboard and currently have a 6 year old waveline 2.9 airbed inflatable which has a max outboard capacity of 8hp,when i use the engine at full power the boat bends and flexes quite alarmingly. would a new waveline 3.2 airbed inflatable which it says can handle up to a 15hp engine still have the same problems many thanks

Hey Bazley,
Does the new waveline have a ridgid bottom?
If not i'd strongly suggest getting one with this feature as i'd think it would be needed to stop the boat bending with the speed of a 15hp engine?

The rating is for the general amount of thrust that can be transmitted through the transom and float connections - so a dinghy rated at 9.8 horsepower will not flex or bend the larger 3.2m dinghy - in fact, an outboard rated at 15 hp will not flex or bend the larger dinghy...

From looking at the Airbed inflatables, they are what I call "pure inflatables" - that is they do not have a rigid keel or bottom. My old 11 ft Avon roll-up is the same type of dinghy even though it has a fiberglass sectioned floor.
- - The keel of a pure inflatable dinghy is an inflated high pressure tube and the floor is normally a separate inflated bladder or sometimes plywood panels.
- - Unless you seriously over-inflate the keel, floor and tubes, the pure inflatable dinghy will do a "snake dance" when you try to get it up on plane. If the tubes are not rigid then you can get a dramatic folding in half of the dinghy as the outboard engine pushes the stern forward but the bow half of the dinghy is held back by water pressure. Overpowering with a larger engine makes the bending more pronounced.
- - My 11 ft Avon does a dramatic snake maneuver as it tries to get up and on plane. The bow wave ripples back through the boat as a "hump" until finally it is left astern.
- - This is normal for pure inflatables and why most everybody has moved to RIB's (fiberglass or metal hulls with inflatable tubes surrounding).

Dump the inflatable and get a hard dinghy. The guy who invented inflatable dinghies should be made to shove each one up near to where a monkey keeps his nuts. They are the most diabolical pieces of junk ever made, witness all the heaps of non-biodegradable fabric scattered around the boatyards of the world.

My wife and I have a firm belief that every inflatable we have ever owned was posessed.

They tow badly, difficult to get novices in and out of ( especially in those ridiculous shoes), they leak air, etc etc

But they never once scratched my topsides!
