winch replacement

After 26 years of heavy use, one of my Maxwell 25 self tailing winches has failed.

Although I am making enquires, I am not optimistic about finding replacement parts so I am looking for replacement winches as I anticipate the other winches to begin failing.

My boat is a Radford 40, cutter rigged, steel hull; I cruise in the Caribbean trade winds primarily; I also regularly do 1,000 plus mile passages so I am looking for advice on the best manual self tailing winches on the market today for this type of use.

Cheers

Tom

Re: winch replacement

I have worked on pretty much all of the winches out there. Any of them will do the job. BUT>>>> If it was my boat, I’d go with Andersen. The materials, the engineering, and the manufacturing are just top notch, and the price doesn’t break the bank either.

Re: winch replacement

The down side of using different vendors is that no parts are interchangeable if needed eg you might have to swap winches rather than steal a part from another if needed
Just something to think about

Re: winch replacement

I also would use Andersons if it were my boat... wonderful winches.
