Getting Shafted With My Boom Shipping (pun intended)

Hello,

I am getting a new boom for my Leopard 43 catamaran. The rigging company has told me it's going to be over $1,000 USD to ship it 950 miles in the eastern US. I have not done this before. It seems high to me but I have no reference point.

Can anyone comment from experience if this seems like a fair price?

Thank you!

It is heavy, long, and I'm sure it will go by freight. I'm not surprised by the price at all.

Thank you!

Is this your feeling or have you had some experience to compare it to?

Thanks again for your time and input.

It may be difficult to find a comparable. The person would have to have had the same shipment very recently, from and to the same location at the same time of year.

If I were double checking on a price, I would simply google freight calculator or Freight Quote and request a few quotes.

though, IMO a boat buck sounds reasonable for this freight.

Think about it...

It can't fit on a pallet. Requires manual handling at each terminal. Takes space on a truck that would otherwise go to at least three pallet loads.

It might actually be going on a point to point dedicated truck. How much do you think a trucker charges for a 2 day trip?

It cost $200 to ship my small boat fridge from the warehouse in Miami to Maryland. I was surprised.

You could try getting quotes from Shiply.com. They take your dimensions & weight, origin and destination and put it out to trucking companies to bid on. Of course then you may have to deal with a trucking company you've never heard of. But it might be a lot less than $1k.

I'll take a guess and say that they charge a pretty penny for that boom, right?
And now tack on another $1K to ship it?
Me, I'd be tempted to get some nice Spruce and build a boom.
But I understand that the sailing season is getting started and few would want to lose any time in which to enjoy their boat.
