Furler Questions

Beneteau Oceanis 400 ( furler is mounted below the deck in the anchor locker)

Current furler is a ProFurl Basic 35 with a M drum.

Problem is that I want to be able to adjust the forestay, this model does not allow for that and it is a bear to put in in the anchor locker. I unstep my mast each fall and step every spring.

Use- the boat is a cruiser and the crew is my wife who is limited in her ability to help. So I am near single handed

If change out the furler, which brand, which model and will it all fit together well under the deck? I have been offered a good deal on a Harken unit 2 III

Does anybody have any thoughts given that often I use a winch to furl the sail. I have been told that is a no no.

The old is unit is in average condition, what would one expect to recover from it in $ if it all comes apart and can easily be shipped?

All suggestions welcomed

Fletch

Re: Furler Questions

There is no fundamental issue with using a winch to furl.. I have been doing so for the 6 years I have owned Tuscan Sun.. It's one way to simplify single handing.Of course, if you go nuts and exert all the force the winch can muster and furl when the genoa is under full pressure ..ie do something you well know you shouldn't, then of course there is the possibility of damage.
