Y-Valve Not Working . . . or Am I an Idiot ?

I cant pump overboard!

When i switch my Y valve, the handle on the head goes up, but will not come down... as if it is blocked, or there is an incredible amount of pressure preventing me from pushing the handle down.


Its a Raritan PHII which works normally when pumping to the holding tank, but when I switch the Y valve, I get nothing.


Am I missing something?

Could there be a (closed) seacock / valve on the discharge throughull?

Have you cleaned out the discharge hose recently. The hose may be blocked by calcium deposits. Happened to me this spring. The hose for direct discharge was completely blocked and the head would not pump overboard but would pump to the holding tank. The holding tank would not empty through the mascerator as it used the same discharge hose. New hose and a muriatic acid rinse fixed the problem.

I traced the hoses back from the Y valve and found another valve at the end.

I opened it and it worked fine. I couldnt tell where it was discharging from though... does it go out below the waterline? It certainly wasnt coming out from where the sink & bilge drain from.

So, my questions now are:

1. Where might it be discharging from?

2. Can I leave this valve open all the time? Or do i only open it when I intend to discharge overboard?

The seacock (hose to the great blue) should be closed and secured shut unless you are 3 miles offshore. Normally you would keep all thru hulls shut down when not needed. The y valve us most likely disharging straight overboard from the head or diverting to the holding tank.

Yes ... you want to tell us why you are trying to pump overboard?

Lost my link but now I think you're playing around. You probably need placards that explain the law. These need to be posted that's the law. Two toy can't pump overboard. You may want to consider a courtesy examination by a coast gaurd auxilliary group near you. They won't fine you but wll point out what you need inboard mYbe a course or 3 will help you avoid some fines and get you ststted in a more enjoyable direction.

Im not asking about the law, I know the law.

Sorry maybe I'm missing what's going on. Usually after the head on the discharge line there is a y valve. This diverts sewage to the holding tank in on position the other way idischarge may go up to a vented loop higher then the waterline the back to a final valve that would be direct overboard discharge. That's the vLve I thought you wanted to leave open. A third line would go from the holding tank to a deck plate for pump out. It may be that your system is different and so you may need to follow the lines to there ends to establish the purpose. Could be that you have 2 valves on the overboard side as the thru hull is hard to access but I'm making assumptions and maybe more of an ass of myself
