sealant for hoses??

HI, I have a question my boat has some sort of sealant in the hoses in the fittings. I would like to know what it could be. I am thinking a beat of this goop would be good on the barbs where the hoses connect to. It should eliminate potential leaks. I am attaching a picture. It is still soft and it has been there a while. Any advise would be helpfull.

Normally you don't want any sealant between the hose and the barb. Makes things very difficult to service down the road. A quality non-perforated hose clamp (2 ideally) is all you need to seal the connection.

NO "goop" (sealant") on hose connections, so do what's necessary to remove what's there. Warming the ends a bit--JUST a BIT!--and a little dishwashing liquid (NO oil or grease!!) makes them easier to slip onto the fittings (also makes them a lot easier to remove when the time comes to replace). Double clamp each connection, putting the screws 180 degrees apart...or at least 90 degrees if location makes 180 impossible.

I can't tell what the hose in your photo is used for, but if a tank vent line, it should be replaced with sanitation hose. If it's a fresh water hose, it should have a red stripe if it carries hot water, a blue stripe for cold.

And one more thing... get the UPC label off the hose clamp. It both causes, and hides, corrosion that you don't want, and need to see.

Hose clamps with slots just don’t last...even the ones that say all stainless. The really good clamps cost painful dollars but last forever. I use polyurethane because I hate leaks. Somehow it never completely sticks to both the fitting and the hose. Heat gun and a razor knife.
For hydronic I found the constant torque clamps on silicone hose is terrific. No 5200 needed.

As an additional note, IMHO, sealants are generally used on hoses as short-cuts, usually due to:

Wrong hose size vs fitting (US vs European as an example)
Reusing old (likely swollen) hoses
Attempting to make assembly easier (see Peggie's note above)
Damaged fitting

It is worth looking carefully at your installation and fixing any underlying issues.

Indeed.
I always used non-perforarated worm-screw (& T-Bolt) hose clamps by AWAB & ABA, which use 316-grade stainless steel, are completely non-magnetic, use stamped serrations, instead of cut-through perforations, have rolled/beveled edges, and now have the same parent company.
