Cranky Water Connections

I probably know the answer to this, but thought I'd explore this wonderful knowledge base for any helpful tips/tricks.

It seems like I'm constantly dealing with a leak or some other problem with one or another of the water systems (fresh, cooling, waste, etc.) on my boat. The thing is, it just seems like getting the hose off of a barb-type connection (tee, elbow, etc.) always turns out to be "a whipping."

Is there not a relatively easy, curse-free method?
