How to remove a clutch from a yacht engine?

How to remove a clutch from a yacht engine?

Clutch is burnt out.
I need to remove, take to a workshop & get resurfaced.

see photos below

But how?
I have taken a few clutches out of cars.
But a boat?

Lister Petter STW3 with an LM100 reverse gear.

Do I start at the stern, taking apart the coupling,
( will that allow the reduction gear to be removed? )
thus, remove the reduction gear

then would that allow the gear box to unbolted,
shifted rearward
and removed, with the clutch inside it?

would the engine need to be supported somehow?

On a mooring, a long way from any professional help.
Looking for guidance / suggestion

Re: How to remove a clutch from a yacht engine?

Generically speaking one unbolt the shaft coupling and slide the shaft back as far as possible. The gear box would then be unbolted from the bell housing. It can then be removed by sliding it out of the drive plate and removed. If there are no mounts on the trans and only on the engine no other support should be required. If there mounts on the trans then the back of the engine needs to be supported. Wood blocks an a couple of wooden wedges should suffice. In this case loosen the top nuts on the trans mounts and lift the back end of the motor to lift the trans just enough to take the weight off the mounts.

It's not clear in your description if the trans is not operating in either forward and reverse or just one direction is the issue. Both directions not working indicates possibly the drive plate or possibly the transmission itself. One direction not working indicates internal transmission issues. Again this is a generic reply. I wish you well on this.

Unfortunately it sounds like the trans, as you surmised. After you slide the shaft back you may want to tie it off and if it leaks tighten the stuffing box. Just to remember to adjust it properly after the repairs. Again best wishes.
