LectraSan vs Holding Tanks

I am looking at buying a boat, it needs both heads replaces, I am leaning toward the Lectra san on board treatment system. Anyone out there have any thoughts?
I'm real new at this boat thing and I would appreciate any guidance I can get.

I think the Electra Scan is a great product but as Sailorboy pointed out, there are a few places where you can't discharge even treated waste. The Raritan Hold n' Treat system is a good answer to that problem.

Thats the exact system I have, and I love it!

The Hold N treat replaced our old 50 gallon holding tank freeing up space.

With the hold n treat we have the freedom to safely and legally discharge in any area not declared a No Discharge Zone (NDZ) by the EPA. When in a NDZ with the turn of a key we go into No Discharge Mode and we store waste until we get to an area where discharge of treated waste is legal or we find a pump out.

The tank on the unit in the photo is 15 gallons, which is about 2 days from our vaccuflush heads for two people.

HK, Peggie Hall, the Head Mistress, sent me a note concerning this thread.
I'll just quote her:

"If he's in New England, Long Island Sound or SoCal he wouldn't be able to get enough use out of a treatment system to justify the cost.If he's on the the Great Lakes or any inland instrastate lake, he wouldn't be able to use one at all, 'cuz the Great Lakes and all the inland lakes are no-discharge waters."

You may want to consider installing one of each. I did this on our boat and it is a great solution. When we are in no discharge areas we poop forward (into the tank) and when we are not in a no discharge we poop aft (into the Lectrasan).

Plan a pump out and an overboard macerator pump discharge for the tank and you will be in fine shape where ever you go.

I had lantra San. Threw it out and put holding tank on. Back toilet always goes to tank and other toilet can go over side or to tank. I use bio side stuff in tank. All poops done in back toilet and we pump it out when offshore. Lantra San expensive to keep running and do not satisfy the authorities.
