Cape May Trip

Planning a trip to Cape May from the Chesapeake on our 40 SeaRay Sundancer, wanted to go to Harbor View Marina, is it best to go via the Cape May Canal or the Main enterance of the Cape May Harbor?

There's no reason for you not to take the canal, which will save you a good bit of distance from going all the way around to the inlet. The bridge height is 55' and I believe the depth is >6' at MLW.

Stay at least on the canal's centerline or maybe a bit to port as you enter the Cape May Canal. The ferry boats push silt up on the starboard side. And be ready to counter steer for the ferry's prop wash as they load/unload.

Re: Cape May Trip

If it's a nice day, go around. You have to pay attention to the chart plotter. There are MANY offlying shoals to be cognizant of. It can be worthwhile to take your time and fish the rips. OR, if you just want to get into a marina and ride your bike to the beach, go directly there via the canal. If it's questionable outside, do yourself a favor and just go inside. You (and your significant other) will appreciate the smooth quick trip to shelter.

Nice day or not take the canal, nothing difficult or special about it.
