Re: Warning! Boat seizures reported in Mexico

I don’t think this is the kind of trouble Jimmy Buffett was referring to in “Tampico Trauma”.

Re: Warning! Boat seizures reported in Mexico

Funny, was to sail on a boat out of Mexico this past March. Upon arriving at the boat, who should step out of the cabin is a "gringo" who had been performing some maintenance for the owner. The guy is an ex pat and his skills didn't come cheap plus, he left the boat a mess. Could tell you more but these are the types that should be busted!

Re: Warning! Boat seizures reported in Mexico

Why should he be busted? If the owner is happy with the level of service and the price, who is anyone to say he can't offer them?

Locals often don't have the requisite skills to do the work, and there is often a language barrier.

That sounds like I never got a ticket for 20mph over the limit on this stretch of Hwy, it's unfair I got one today.

Expect over-zealous retaliation from politically affected countries.

I read the post a couple times looking for the complaint. Couldn’t find it. I interpreted the post as a heads-up that laws that have gone un-enforced in the past are now being enforced. Happens a lot here in California as well, usually as a result of a new court ruling or incident/string of incidents. Or because the State just realized there was potential fine revenue in enforcement.

Re: Warning! Boat seizures reported in Mexico

Hello Friends, Now that I am a "land lubber" I don't check in to this forum as much - but I still love hearing about your life, your challenges and your conflicts with your equipment and waters you travel to/from.

But, I have been "turned off" several times recently as "caustic/snide/non-helpful" comments are made (such as some responses to the Mexican stuff above).

I think we are better than that?

Friend,

Dennis

Re: Warning! Boat seizures reported in Mexico

mexico has laws.
before entering mexico do learn these laws.
chartering demands a local OWNER or co owner.
DEMANDS
by law. same as long range atuneros. must have mexican co owner / captain.
why should entering gringos receive different treatment than japanese or other nationalities.
aside... newly elected presidente will be enforcing immigration laws more stringently as he is a CHAVISTA, follower of hugo chavez. antiamerican by history, if you have been watching first cuba then venezuela, also chavista nations. yes. seriously. screw the wall, mexico is implementing enforcement. means nothing that he promised mexico stronger borders..
so.... wanna break laws in mexico>? HAHAHAHAHA mexiprison aint like the country club atmosphere of prisons in usa.

and bw---- captains in mexico are smarter than those buying uscg licenses in and from usa. they actually attend school and learn navigation by stars and gps. they learn so many more things than uscg storebought alleged captaincy. makes usa "cpts" look really ignorant of laws and navigation.
so. when you are whining about not having a licensed cpt to help deliver your boat, there are many excellent licensed captains in mexico.
stop selling mexico short. you will not like the consequences.

$900 for a ten day vacation in the Gray Bar Hotel?
Sounds like he got a great package deal.

It is illegal to work for pay in Mexico on a tourist visa. This is well known and understood in the expat community. No one should be surprised when Mexican authorities enforce the law.

Re: Warning! Boat seizures reported in Mexico

The difference is they have mostly very poor people.

People who can afford to travel for fun, coming from wealthy countries and scamming work illegally from the locals, is of course morally wrong as well as dangerously illegal.

Poor people coming to be exploited as cheap labor by a wealthy country who pretends not to need them to do the scutwork its citizens won't do, may be technically "illegal" but are certainly not doing anything ethically wrong

Well of course it's illegal. The question is, "Should it be illegal?"

If the boat is owned by an American and the worker is American, and the owner pays the worker via PayPal into his American PayPal account, how does Mexico even know? As far as they are concerned, he's just doing a friend a favor.

The objective of the law is to protect local workers. But, if I'm not willing to hire a local due to lack of competence, than I haven't really taken a job from a local, because they wouldn't have gotten it anyway.

Absolute rubbish, such that I don't even know where to begin.
