There is a difference between the way Hurricane and Cyclones are measured. Even though they are born and behave in a similar fashion.
The US uses the Saffir/Simpson Scale while in Oceana we use the Australian Cyclone Severity Scale.

The scales can be seen here. (I cant seem to be able to post xls data without it going haywire)

Source Tropical Cyclone Plotting Information / Intensity Scale Comparison

On a side note, Where the hell is that red head from canberra at the moment. Anna bligh is doing an amazing (almost stateman-like) job. That "other" labor woman seems to be under a rock somewhere. Its time like this that a good prime minister would be on tv several times a day explaing what the federal govt is doing. (maybe she is busy reading Bush's guide to emergency management)

While I know that Anna is communicating on behalf of the army and over federal depts, but jooolia could at least make a statement or two.

end of rant.

Cheers

From the BOM "Yasi is likely to be the most life-threatening storm in living memory".

This guy does a good detailed analysis of why this storm will be so nasty.

Thank goodness. I think perhaps She realises Queenslanders do not want her wineing tone in front of them right now. She may even rethink her oneoff flood levy.

Townsville will possibly be worse affected than Cairns now.
