Guns on board?

These guys had 33 Russian T72 battle tanks onboard and were still the victims of piracy. The Horn of Africa is out of control!

Well... it's not like they could roll one out on the foredeck as a defensive posture...

(From Migot1)

pirats?
we were sailing 50 miles from Bierut Lebanon. it was midnight.
a very large fishing boat came near us. I changed course 90 degrees...and I saw the Fishing boat do the same. now I got worried. I strted the engine, woke up everyone onboard. we changed course again 90 deg. so did the fishing boat. now she was just 100 yards away... were they pirates???! I put out all my lights, gave the Yanmar engine 3400 rpm, and made it away in the darkness...
2 days later we arrived in Cyprus. I went to the Marina Manager..and told him all about it...he began to laugh.. there are Spanish fishing boats out here ..and they set their nets in a RECANGULLAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yea if you are trying to swat a fly you dont use a 4 by 8 sheet of ply wood. I dont think the tanks would be much use. if course of they were on the decks they might have thought twice about what else was on board.

What would be scary is if the pirates were actually able to land the cargo off this ship. It's loaded with all sorts of goodys like RPGs, Kalashnikov's, the tanks and enough ammunition to fight a good sized war. Can see these guys getting hold of a landing craft or boat capable of carrying the wt. of one of those tanks. Instant battle ship. Their isn't a commercial captain in the world that wouldn't stop if you put 120mm round through his ship. It would even be a formidable foe for a large coastral defense boat.

Aloha

What will really be scary is when the Russian naval vessel shows up ... at least for the pirates.

Yeah! I'm interested to see the Russian response, too. The French paid the ransom (on the big private yacht seized in the same area a few months back) then grabbed the pirates. I think they then turned them over to Somalia, who promised to punish them. I think the Russian response will be a bit different!

A lot of us are interested in what that response will be. I also greatly appreciate the Americans standing by to be sure nothing is off loaded untill they arrive.

One of the articles posted here over the weekend said that they killed some in the firefight and the rest were taken back to France to stand trial. Something France has vigorously protested when certain other countries do this sort of thing...

I'm just sayin'...
