VHF radio licence

Hello all I’m preparing for a trip from Canada down the west Coast Canadian vessel. Just wondering what I would need to do get licence and register my radio? Does everyone do this? Is it mandatory in America? Will I need different ones for different country’s? I have on board a icon m502 and a hand held ic m73. Thanks for your help in advance

Re: VHF radio licence

You may want to peruse this thread: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...-us-67547.html

I have no idea how many do it, as I suspect enforcement is mostly lax. You should have a ship station license (request using form IC-3020) for the vessel and a radio operator's certificate (ROC-M) for anyone using the radio.

They work for most any country, as the general international rule is that you must have the appropriate ship station and operator licenses from your own country. Some countries (like Canada and the US) no longer require some licensing (e.g. ship station licenses) for recreational vessels, but that exemption only applies within their own waters to their own vessels. Travel outside and the international rules are back in play.

You need only to have the licence from Canada to use your VHF in US waters.

Re: VHF radio licence

The license from Industry Canada with your Call Sign & your MMSI is all you need in the US (and most anywhere else). Your yacht needs be properly licensed in her home country. Like the US, Canada has relaxed rules for VHF (not HF) radio use inside the country but if you are traveling abroad or speaking on the radio to licensees of other countries you'll need a proper ship and operators license.
