I didn't see many of the models you are looking for, when I was looking in September, month before the charter season ends in October, in the Mediterranean. I was looking for an Owner version 3/2, but not many in the Mediterranean. I did ended up buying a 2013, L400S2, Owner version 3/3, for a decent price and low engine hours, in Croatia. I'm still going through the de-flagging process.

Just another thought for you, I was open to the same models you are, the 39 is heavy and slower sailing then the L400S2. You will notice the size difference of the 39 vs the L400S2, in the interior and rear cockpit area. If you can, get a L400, L400S2 or the 40.

However, just buying a catamaran is a good thing!

Best of luck with you hunt

Re: lagoon 39 or 40 or 400 s2

The 400 is the largest boat, most bang for the buck, we like ours. The Lagoon 39 and the 40 are almost the same (slightly over 38ft, a lot heavier and more of a competition for the 380), the 40 feels even smaller, the FP Lucia looks more modern, but is also not really a 40ft cruising cat. Very little storage and carryng capacity. The real successor of the 400 space wise is the 42.

The newer Lagoons all have the mast stepped back to allow for a smaller self tacking jib and a smaller main, while the 400 has a large square top main sail and a large overlapping genoa. In my opinion a better sail set up, but you have to handle the sheets manualy when tacking - not a big deal btw.

Boats get old over time, but a 6yo cat is not a old vessel.

Even new boats need maintenance and tweaks to make them fit for cruising. From the factory they are designed for one week near shore or island hopping trips between marinas and harbors regarding water fuel, propane capacity, electric systems, electronics, storage for clothes and food. They are optimized to sleep as many unrelated people as possible, with separate heads per cabin and conversions of storage in the bow to crew cabins and heads for a skipper and mate.

We are very happy to have found one of the rare 3 cabin 2 heads owners version.

My advice would be, get the largest boat you can afford and handle, even if it is older. You will deal with repairs and maintenance anyway and you will do upgrades, changes and necessary refits for cruising, it is mentally easier to do it on an older boat instead on a brand new one with warranty.

Re: lagoon 39 or 40 or 400 s2

model, loa, beam, draft, displacement, height

L380: 11.56m, 6.53m, 1.14m, 7.2t, 17.32m
L39 : 11.74m, 6.80m, 1.27m, 11.6t, 18.41m
L40 : 11.73m, 6.76m, 1.35m, 10.8t, 18.42m
L400: 11.97m, 7.25m, 1.21m, 10.2t, 20.30m
L42 : 12.80m, 7.70m, 1.24m, 12.0t, 20.65m
L420: 12.60m, 7.49m, 1.27m, 7.27t,
Lucia: 11.73m, 6.61m, 1.20m, 8.90t,

More draft means smaller hulls and heavier boat, combined with a shorter mast and smaller sail area leads to less performance. The older models are all better than the recent (380, 400, 420)

Re: lagoon 39 or 40 or 400 s2

CatNewBee shares some very good points regarding the Lagoon Models.

I've sailed on the a newer 2017 Lucia, and definitely feel the difference with storage and space in the hulls, I too preferred the L400, for a live aboard.

I saw the same data you are quoting in the L420 and I believe that is incorrect. Another site says 25,838 pounds or about 11.7 tonnes.
Also the l get the Lucia at around 9.5t.

Not in the Med, and no S2, but i think very good offer. Considering it is an owners version and even EU VAT is already paid...
