Puerto Rico for hurricane season

We have a cata 420 and we are looking for leaving the boat in Marina Puerto del Rey in Puerto Rico for the hurricane season. We will haul the boat but anyway We are worried about the hurricanes, please anybody can tell me how is that marina for the hurricane season and if any hurricane hit it?

NOAA has an extensive online database of every hurricane over the past century at: https://coast.noaa.gov/hurricanes/ Needless to say, if it's in the Caribbean, something windy and wet has hit it in that time period. Not certain what this will tell you - you pay your money and take your chances.

If the boat is on the hard, tied down and you get the sails off her she will be as safe as anywhere in the northern Caribbean. Which means that your insurance might cover you and you might survive through a cat 2-3

You would be better off further south. Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Trinadad & Tobago, even Grenada.

I've kept my boat on the hard for two years and I feel it's a better option then most of the other marines in the Virgins

Hurricane Hugo 1987 or 1988 (can't remember) pretty much devastated most of the island. And to a much lesser extent Hurricane David a couple of years before that. I lived there for 6 years and many hurricanes were in the area but skipped PR until that Hugo taught us a lesson.

With weather patterns changing/intensifying this be very dated info, but yes, hurricanes do hit, albeit rarely in my experience.

We chose PRD expressly because of the facilities they have there, the way they manage boats during the season, and the security. We've found no other marina that offeres the buried concrete beams to tie to...most all others we checked use sand screws as an anchor(???). And by stacking the boats very close together they tend to stabilize the whole line. Our insurance company liked it, Boat US and other agencies claim its the safest way to survive a hurricane, and the security is (now) top drawer. and they are amoungst the cheapest ...I didn't say cheap!...you'll find around. couple that with the fact that the San Juan airport is very easy and inexpensive to fly into, and it's a no-brainer! IMHO....we've been there the last 3 years, and going again this season.
