2007 Seawind 1160 Deluxe under contract

Have a contract pending and sea trial on a 2007 Seawind 1160 Deluxe 38' Cat. Boat appears to have been well-maintained with a knowledgeable owner. Looking for advice from other Seawind owners on survey tips or whatever you wish someone had mentioned. Also, annual cost of maintenance and insurance for similar boats. Thanks for your input!

Hi Tommy congrats on your pending purchase, to get any sort of reasonable reply to you question the responded needs to know more than your name is Tom, you are a boy and you do not like rain.

Your intended cruising ground will have a big effect on these costs. Good luck with the survey process.

Yes, thanks for the obvious left out of the post. Initially, Florida out of St. Augustine, familiarizing with the vessel. Then likely the ICW, Bahamas. Anticipate working with an experienced captain until gaining enough experience to sail comfortably with co-owner.

Hi Tommy - the SW1160 is a fine coastal cruiser. Owned one myself for five years. Only things I can think of to check at survey on a boat of that age would be the steering system (especially the track under the transom), the standing rigging (of a 10 year old boat) the props (if Gori's), and that state of the batteries. The SW1160 is well constructed and if well maintained will give you a lot of joy. N'joy!

PS Maintenance costs will vary considerably depending if you do your own maintenance or hire someone to do it for you. The maintenance on a 10 year old vessel will be higher than new, will depend on usage and hard to predict. Insurance costs will depend on the boats value and your usage. Pretty quick and easy to get a quote from any broker

Thanks! The idea is to perform as much maintenance ourselves to save the wallet. I’m hoping the insurance is reasonable since we going to be conservative sailors until we gain more experience then try our hand making passages.

Cheers!

Windlass hawspipe stripper can be a problem. Trampoline nets. Hoses in heads. Travelers arrangement on top of arch can be hard to move. Cockpit fridge has little insulation. Then check the sail drive. They are a great boat

Cost AUD 16000 per year to commercially maintain 2000 Seawind 1000 used weekends and up to 2 weeks for 110 days a year in Morton Bay near Brisbane Qld. So you might expect to spend up to half that if doing yourself.

That echoes the estimates from other Seawind 1160 owners. Sea trial went well. Also had the opportunity to see several different cats for sale in the yard for comparison. Down to a few items, tick-tock. We shall see.

Thanks,

Tom

The Seawind 1160 is an excellent boat and there are dozens cruising the Queensland coast each year. We have been on a few when up there, the owners do not report anything major as being of consideration. Good luck.
