Auction: 1979 Morgan 382 Sloop, Eliot, Maine

This boat was in our marina all winter and into the spring without payment. The lawyers have now cleared the way to allow us to auction it off next Monday, Aug 3, at noon at the address below.

Price will be determined at auction, best guess is bidding will start at $5,000.

If anyone is interested, here is the text of the public notice that we published in the local papers:

NOTICE OF PUBLIC SALE PURSUANT TO THE MAINE MARINA AND BOATYARD STORAGE ACT

Notice is hereby provided that, pursuant to the Maine Marina and Boatyard Storage Act, Title 10 Section 1385 of the Maine Revised Statutes, the below-described boat shall be sold at the Great Cove Boat Club at 225 Main Street in Eliot, York County, Maine, on August 3, 2015 at 12PM. Bidding is open to the public. The boat to be sold is further described as follows:

A 38-foot Morgan sail sloop, owned by Steven Sobotincic of Portsmouth, NH, model number 382.

The boat described is presently located at the Great Cove Boat Club in Elliot, Maine.

Inquiries regarding the purchase of said boat may be made to:

Re: Auction: 1979 Morgan 382 Sloop, Eliot, Maine

I went aboard again today and got some pictures of the engine, Yanmar 3-cyl. it turned over when I hit the start button for just a second, but I made no attempt to go beyond that (it's out of the water.)

I'm not qualified to offer an opinion about its value, but hopefully someone will get a good deal and the marina will get some of its back rent.

I was just wondering how big the bidding got on this?

If I lived near I'd probably have been there.

One bidder showed up, late. He said he would take it for what was going to be the reserve: $5K. He said he'd be by Wednesday to finalize the deal.

I think he's going to do well with it. Despite a couple of years of neglect, it was at one time well-rigged and well taken care of. There's a ton of gear and extras aboard that are worth much more than what he's paying.

Re: Auction: 1979 Morgan 382 Sloop, Eliot, Maine

The deal fell through on the one bidder. Maybe we should have advertised better!

The Morgan still sits waiting for a new owner. The club will be engaging a broker, unless someone comes by with some cash before then!

Now that the auction thing is over, and the club owns the boat outright, I won't have any legal entanglements offering some opinions.

It certainly shows signs of neglect over the past year or so. But it survived the winter in the water well. The marina manager kept an eye on it and reported no excessive water or other issues. The brightwork needs refinishing, and there's a lot of cleaning to be done.

Before the last year or so, it's clear that it was well equipped and well maintained. I don't think there would be a ton of work, or huge expense, to make it ready for long-distance cruising. There is a brand-new Garmin radome, and the manual for a 4000 series MFD, which was not on board when we took possession. But it suggests the boat was not maintained on a shoestring budget. That one project probably cost the previous owner about what we're asking for the whole boat.

Is the asking price still $5,000?

Right about the time I was posting this, apparently someone was up in the office writing out a check for a down payment. As of now, it's sold.

Sorry!

Definition of a keeper:
Me: hey honey, there's this large boat that I'd like to buy
Her: Does it heel less than our current 23ft, and will it break the bank?
Me: it'll be more stable, we can afford it, but someone else its getting a good deal..
Her: Offer more!

(Me thinking to myself.... Never let her on a cat.. )
