Re: Converting from 220 volts to 110

And you have a 120 volt 400 watt kettle? Mine is 1500 watts.

Re: What boats might fit these criteria?

Take a good look at a Peterson 44. The center cockpit isn't high like many other boats. The downside is the passageway from fore to aft cabin is not as easy to negotiate.

Re: Converting from 220 volts to 110

A 1500 watt kettle, for example, uses twice as much current on 120 volts as on 240 volts. It is current that both wire and breakers are sized for, not voltage.

As I posted, it depends how the boat...

Re: Converting from 220 volts to 110

Some European boats are wired with a large enough gauge of wire for North America and some aren't. It depends on the manufacturer.

In Europe the main breaker is 16 amps and branch circuits are 8...

Re: What boats might fit these criteria?

I see nobody has mentioned the Kelly/Peterson 44/46. Worth looking at I think.

Re: Starter wiring with in line fuse?

Regardless of what some solar companies state fuses are not needed between panels and controller. The panels are self limiting. If a panel is rated at 5 amps you will only ever get 5 amps from it.

Re: Starter wiring with in line fuse?

Solar panels do not need fuses between the panel and the controller. They do need fuses after the controller and as close to the batteries as possible.

Re: Starter wiring with in line fuse?

Every wire connected to a battery should be fused close to the battery as it is the source. Alternators, solar controllers, chargers or any other items connected to a battery are self limiting in...

Re: Starter wiring with in line fuse?

I regularly fuse starter circuits on diesel engines up to about 50 or 60 hp without any issues. I also fused a 6 cylinder diesel and there have not been any nuisance blows in the year since.

Re: Best House battery combinations ?

Option 1 is the better choice. The 12 volt batteries are only quasi deep cycle.

Golf cart 6 volt batteries are true deep cycle batteries. They have thicker plates and will give up to double the...

Re: How to measure solar panel current

If you have a battery monitor it will tell you current used or charging. I believe it is an essential item as you really do not know the state of your batteries without one. They typically use a...

Re: How Do You Calculate Battery Bank Total Amp Hour Capacity?

Or with the same amp draw a larger bank than its 20 hour rating.

Re: How Do You Calculate Battery Bank Total Amp Hour Capacity?

Not quite, you are forgetting Peukert. When a battery is rated at 100 AH it is based on the 20 hour rate. For a 100 AH battery that means a 5 amp draw over the 20 hour period.

If you draw 10 amps...

Re: Magnum Energy MSH versus Victron Energy MultiPlus

I'm not sure where you are looking but those are not all North American models. In North America there is only one 3000 watt Multiplus - 12/3000/120 and it is 120 volt/60 cycles. The only other one...

Re: Wondering why more power boats aren't using solar power to recharge house batteri

Agree, no reason to dislike powerboats.

But there is no more reason to need generators on a powerboat than on a sailboat. If desired a powerboat can be as energy efficient as a sailboat.

With...

Re: Impossible decision regarding charging

Don't you mean amp hours?

Nomenclature is important.

A 2 amp load uses the same 2 amps in 1 minute as it uses in 24 hours.

Re: Which charges my battery faster, generator or altenator

You cannot put the 100 AH used each day back in 2 hours.

As posted above 50% to 80% charging can be accomplished quickly as the batteries at this level will accept larger currents. With your 450...

Re: Electric flush head with manual option?

Not quite true. The Lavac is a manual toilet that can be used with an electric pump. The manual pump stays in place and can be used if desired. It is also the most reliable manual toilet available as...

Re: Adding Solar Panels with Existing Generator

No switch is needed. It is just an additional battery charging system.

Get a good quality MPPT controller - Victron, Morningstar etc.

Re: Wondering why more power boats aren't using solar power to recharge house batteri

A powerboat often has an easier time of installing un-shaded solar panels than a sailboat. More wattage as well.

Re: Galley sink won't drain unless we move the boat

I have seen heavy boats - Cape George 36 for one - that had the hull deep in the water and they had to have a pump to evacuate the galley sink.

But a Hunter has a lot less hull body below the...

I don't think it will work very well and here's why. When the mainsheet is led forward from the traveller position the distance is fixed from that point to the mast and aft to the winch or cleat. The...

Re: Wondering why more power boats aren't using solar power to recharge house batteri

I haven't seen many powerboats of any size running a single group 27. Most have either 4 or more golf cart batteries or the once popular 8D's.

Powerboats have several advantages over sailboats...
