Re: Centerboard Keels in Blue Water Vessels

Ours is a 1984 Camper Nicholson 58 ketch. 6'-8" board up with a long modified full keel. 13' board down. The upwind performance gain is about 4-5 degrees. I am not pleased with the complicated...

Re: LED Nav Lights

Appears to be the same as my Marine Beam. (post # 7) They say exceeds 3NM. I'd say it makes 5NM on a clear night. Since we only need 2NM I am not worried. I also added peel & stick aluminum...

Re: New Gen Anchor Problem- Sailing off Anchor

I also agree. We are 37 tons; Rocna 54; all 7/16 chain rode. I always use the engine, if for no other reason - I want power on while I operate the windlass. I want no surprises when we become...

Re: New Orleans Help through the locks

Outsider on your local locks. We did the locks at the SOO on the St Mary's River to Lake Superior this summer. It was no big deal. Radio; Wait for the green light; motor in; grab the lines; hang...

Re: Flushing the FW side

We get zebra muscles here in the great lakes on the FW side. I drop the water level in the groko strainer by about a quart, refill with Clorox, run it into the cooling system & let it set for about...

Re: USCG Documentation Renewal Fee

how many times? I have both written and called many times. Read the ironically true joke below. This is a tax. they will extract it from you annually because they can. They would do it monthly...

Re: Dumbest thing you ever did?

I hoisted a clew on a spinnaker once - during a race. It actually was working so we left it up.

Re: Tropical Storm to hit St Martin, BVIs, USVI

Heck, the first summer on our boat we sailed in 35 to 45 from Green Bay to Ludington. We made 11 on the partly furled main.

From the sounds of things, they got lucky there.

Re: Cheap way to get 22ft keeler out of water in Sydney? trailer, public slip??

I was going to suggest careening. It can't cost much to haul a 22 footer. If the keel is short you could do one side at a time on the tides. Its only 1100 to haul & winter our 58 footer. There...

Re: Dinghy

Lots of old ground here to search.

My opinion is that your dinghy (motor) should be able to get your boat out of trouble. We are 58 feet with 36 tons. The dinghy is 15 HP. I consider having a...

Re: Balsa Core

The issue is not foam/balsa strength. It is the fact that both saturate with water given the opportunity. Since the structure relies on a dry laminate, the game is lost. Especially in the North,...

Re: A Newbie's Furler Question

For racing, you treat the roller furler as though it was just a race foil. You don't necessesarily (jprobably not) use it to roller furl. Obviously, you must hoist in the open groove & peel after...

Re: Balsa Core

The long explanation of the repair is:

remove the head liner. Check with moisture miter from inside. Outside measurements are often in error due to water in the non-skid etc.

Use a hole saw 3"...

Re: USCG Documentation Renewal Fee

Does that mean that owners of undocumented vessels should expect to receive different/lesser treatment?

If the Fed can use the CG as a tool to extract money for the general...

Re: A Newbie's Furler Question

You will love sailing with a roller furler. Yoour wife will love that nobody needs to go on deck to douse a sail. In most cases, you will never deal with a sail bag or folding sails.

I raced...

Re: How much gain to windward with daggerboards in a big Cat

My primary boat is a large keel boat. It has a swing CB that increases weathering ability about 5 degrees.

I also have a Tornado Cat with center boards. The lee board down makes the boat balance...

Re: Buying used

Consider the opportunity to buy a Great Lakes vessel with no salt exposure and probably 3 months of weekends per year & only in good weather.
