Re: Battery powered 30' sailboat under construction

Unless you live in Maine and have a lot of years to wait for service, this guy isn't available. He's a one-man, one-boat operation which hardly qualifies as a "marine service provider" in my...

Re: Proper shim material for engine alignment?

Don't use metal and don't use raw exposed wood. Both will degrade in that environment and you'll have a mess. Stay with fiberglass or HDPE plates. Also, if your alignment was true 2 years ago, how...

Re: Thoughts on Current 25~30HP Outboard Options

The only reason mfgrs offer longer warranties is to counteract real or assumed reliability issues... And a warranty is only as good as the dealer who can (and is willing to) claim the repayment from...

Re: Thoughts on Current 25~30HP Outboard Options

In looking over the technology of the Suzuki I see that it too has a lot of component parts related to meeting EPA requirements. I'd want to know more about the battery-less EFI to understand how...

Re: Thoughts on Current 25~30HP Outboard Options

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eu3NEPSBfUs Here is a good summary of the nuts and bolts behind the E-Tec technology. IMHO it is way too complicated for most technicians without proper tools...

Re: Propane Regulator - single or dual stage?

I haven't designed big gas projects but I had to install a dual stage regulator on my NG home BBQ due to freezing up of the single stage unit. And that's in San Diego in the warm dry summer and with...

Re: Removing engine oil stain from floor

Sorry to hear about your oil stain but there is hope. First, mix a powder of 1 part baking soda (or other absorbent) and 1 part TSP powder. Sprinkle it over the stain and cover it with plastic...

Re: Propane Regulator - single or dual stage?

The primary advantage to using a dual stage regulator is to prevent frosting up and the resulting clogging of a single stage. The two stage makes two pressure drops while the single makes one large...

Re: New 8hp Yamaha enduro runs poor

Is there any spark timing adjustment or some spark advance mechanism? I'm just wondering if the timing could be off slightly on the one cylinder...

Re: New 8hp Yamaha enduro runs poor

The weakest link in the ignition system is between the plug cap and the plug. If the metal-to-metal contact there is at all loose, the vibration creates added resistance and the spark quality is...

Re: New 8hp Yamaha enduro runs poor

First - go with new plugs. Second - make sure the plug caps are super tight to the plug cap. Third, look for anywhere the lug wires may be pinched against metal in their routing and correct. Fourth...

Re: Yanmar 3JH5E - difficult starting - advice please

That affect on rubber lines is probably due to Ethanol, not Kerosene. Kerosene (aka white gas) is closer to diesel in the refinery cracking process than gasoline and those rubber lines handle...

Re: New 8hp Yamaha enduro runs poor

Sounds to me like it's running too rich on the high speed jet. If so both plug tips will be black and wet. The only way to correct an over-rich high speed condition is to go with a slightly smaller...

Re: New 8hp Yamaha enduro runs poor

2-stroke mix oils are not all the same thing in a different can... The oil that works great at 50:1 will seize you up at 100:1. And the oil that is designed for 100:1 will gum you up at 50:1. ...

Re: Thoughts on Current 25~30HP Outboard Options

Re: The future of batteries, solar, and electric motors....

Being an automotive engineer, I see this for sail powered boats.
1) Lithium "air" battery packs. Light weight and power dense.
2) Wind generators.
3) Diesel back-up generator to recharge...
