Re: On Long Trips - Diesel or Wind ??

Disagree.

The key word in the post was rely

Nothing was said about putting your boat to test. Assuming that your engine will stop working sooner or later and making sure your boat is strong...

Re: On long trips Diesel or wind ??

You don't know that, I never said that!

And you don't know forum etiquette either. Challenge the point of view by all means. Being grumpy, rude and personal is just being grumpy rude and not...

Re: On long trips Diesel or wind ??

Re: On long trips Diesel or wind ??

Don't think so. My whole point is that it's a bad idea to RELY on the engine. If a boat didn't use it's engine to run away and couldn't take the hammering then it shouldn't have been out there in...

Re: On long trips Diesel or wind ??

Yep, really. That was in response to a post about a boat loosing a mast because of not motoring away from bad weather. My point is if you need to rely on an engine to run away then your boat isn't...

Re: On long trips Diesel or wind ??

True, no one will go hunting for heavy weather. Personally I think it's back to front, look to the boat first, sooner and later the engine will fail or you'll run out of diesel - maybe the point is...

Re: On long trips Diesel or wind ??

Well, not quite sure I agree with that completely. There's quite a strong argument for saying that if you need to rely on your motor to run away from weather then your boat isn't strong enough and...

Re: On long trips Diesel or wind ??

+1

Every offshore passage averages around 5 and a bit knots, often (depending on latitute) drifting along at just a few knots. Bliss :) Spend a little money on learning more about...

Re: On long trips Diesel or wind ??

If you mean a single passage of a week, then, as with everything in the world, it depends :)

If I'm stuck in the middle of a big high then the motor will get turned on to try and find some...
