Re: Stealth mode - New Generation Ropes

As for retrieval...
To get stuff on/off the deck alone recently I rigged up a continuous loop (dyneema cos I had some nearby) with several loops round the anchor windlass capstan and back to a block...

Some test data here >

Knots are a REALLY bad idea in dyneema, they slip slowly under load.

Re: Stealth mode - New Generation Ropes

Maybe a bit if line rolling hitched or something between the 2 sides of the loop?
Stuff like that is often better left to when y8u have it sitt7ng in front of you, usually the answer comes to find...

Re: Stealth mode - New Generation Ropes

None of which is much of a problem really, bit of softener between the thimbles would keep them happy. Worse things happen all day every day on building sites around the world with massive loads....

Re: Stealth mode - New Generation Ropes

The span set actually6 is a soft loop, or rather 2. With a 3t shackle joining the ends. Might be an idea to do a little lashing or something to stop it rotating. Benifit of using off the shelf...

Re: Stealth mode - New Generation Ropes

So instead of getting into complex splices/knots why not a simple solution like a Samsung blue line thimble each end of the bridle legs into a double wraped 2t spanset, loop formed with a 3 1/4t...

Re: Stealth mode - New Generation Ropes

More to it than that according to morganscloud, smoking gun is the knot rather than a splice. Plus the line was small for a very heavily loaded boat compared to unladen weight. Then by the sounds of...

Re: Stealth mode - New Generation Ropes

Good idea! Maybe not for the bridles, that length and strength they'd be huge, but maybe worth considering for the attachment between the drogue & bridle. 3 wraps of a 2t swl spanset & a 3.25t...

Re: Stealth mode - New Generation Ropes

What about doing away with the cow hitches altogether and splicing the loop straight into the eyes? Or the worlds fattest longest soft shackle if you want to take it apart? You could have hard eyes...

Re: Stealth mode - New Generation Ropes

On my boat with no chafe issues for a JSD it's a straight bury with a few locking stitches near the end of the splice. Top tip, set a search on ebay for used dyneema kite line, comes up now and...

Re: Stealth mode - New Generation Ropes

Think I need to back down a little on this, Evans found a brummel to reduce strength but not by much.

https://web.archive.org/web/20160318230212/https://www.bethandevans.com/load.htm

I use a...

Re: Stealth mode - New Generation Ropes

No, not as strong. Think about bend radius at the splice. I've destruction tested straight bury splices but not brummel. When you get close to ultimate the bend radius becomes really important,...

Re: Stealth mode - New Generation Ropes

Loss of strength and with a little stitching for peace of mind not necessary.

Re: Stealth mode - New Generation Ropes

Slight aside to that.... I did some work a little while ago on a big aerobatic show in China, fast winches with dyneema for the aerialists, Load testing was a 500Kg load and simulated power failure....

Re: Stealth mode - New Generation Ropes

Interesting discussion, with a hopefully never to be deployed jsd sitting next to the boat in a boatyard right now. Current thinking is replace the bridle legs with 8mm d12 max dyneema. Cos it was...
