Re: The Death of the Ketch ?
You should look carefully at that rig, with its all furling sails including the mule, and the spacing of its masts. I've always thought it was genius myself, couldn't imagine a better more manageable... |

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?
Here's a few pics of my favorite staysail ketch-it's always been one of my favorite rigs, along with the staysail schooner. This particular boat is a 94 ft. ketch I used to do a lot of work on. It... |

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?
Awesome! You'll have to show us that sailing backwards thing sometime.... |

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?
Traditionally, the helm and rudder post tended to be in approximately the same place. Since you can't generally see the rudder post with the boat in the water, people have (traditionally) used helm... |

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?
Based on the layout in these pics, I would call your boat more of a yawl than a ketch. The mizzen is pretty small and aft of the helm. The big difference in most designs between a ketch rig and a... |

Re: Diomedea Exulans, a staysail ketch
For many years I knew a boat at Elliot Bay Marina in Seattle, named Havfruen, about 80' and with an all furling staysail ketch rig. She was sailed and handled quite well by her owners, a couple in... |

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?
Simple-ketches are optimized for sailing downwind and hence carry the tallest mast further forward, so they can carry maximum sail area downwind without unbalancing the helm. Schooners are the... |

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?
Maximize profit for the builder-that's what I was saying is the issue from the start. Just look at the newer Hunters for proof, they don't even have a backstay anymore! I think the less rigging there... |

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?
IMO a cutter beats a sloop for windward performance every time, but we don't see as many of them as we used to either. This tells me it's not about performance, but economics. If people were only... |

Re: The death of the ketch?
Exactly, I have the 52' ketch. It's a Sparkman and Stephens design, and the emphasis is on sailing ability. It has fin and skeg underbody as well, unlike most true motorsailors. It sails like a... |

Re: The death of the ketch?
Then how do you explain a boat like mine, which is ketch rigged but has power in mast furling and power winches? It's not just about splitting the rig for ease of handling, it's about balancing the... |
