Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Congrats, man! Keep it up.

I took a new job managing an extremely busy boat yard, no time for any fun at all here, even refit fun. Good to see you still at it!

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Bilge Kote is pretty good stuff, but not anywhere near as durable and solvent resistant as gel. All paints eventually fail, leading to flaking paint in the bilge, which is dangerous because it clogs...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Anytime! Snow White is easiest to see dirt and mildew on. Apply with a little foamy roller (Slim Jim or the like) for no brush marks. Get extra roller covers, they melt in gelcoat after about five...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Not me! Usually by the time you chase out the problems it's faster and better to just strip it. Looks like they sanded it bare instead of chemical stripping it? Do you know which primer system they...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

You are even more batsh*t crazy than me! School, work, and a refit? Bonkers!

I do work, refit, and twin six year old girls myself.

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

And what kind of coin was under there? I've seen some good ones, including gold. The better the coin, the more the luck! Mines a sterling silver British pound from 1696. I figure it's been around...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

So no strip back to aluminum? You might be able to get them to apply their three coats of primer and a topcoat for the same price after you have stripped it yourself. It'd take you a long weekend to...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

You can get many different sized needle/cap combos to spray different materials for most spray guns. Pressure pot vs. siphon feed is the primary issue.

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Totally unfamiliar with your resin system, but those are short pot life's. You will need more like an hour of working time. Obviously pot life and working time are not the same, the 30 min. pot life...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

The MSDS for your hardener doesn't help much. Is that Fast or Slow? I wouldn't do this layup with Fast.

Suggested poly because I thought you were finishing in gel. You still can if you tie coat with 545. Your biax without stitch matt (1700, the...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Brand? Biax will do fine for that. Personally I would use poly and glass the external skin with a 1708 sandwiched between two 1208 and both a start and finish matt. This gives a very strong 1/4"...

Very good, way to go. Seems Coosa was fairly reasonable for you. What are you glassing with?

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Meh. You can easily build better stuff than that redboard. It's matt only. Super easy to make your own piece, I believe I recently described the process on my refit thread. You don't need much. Happy...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Of course. Coosa is an excellent candidate for a fairly flat cockpit sole like this. It's what I'd use. Do a piece of solid glass flat stock or G10 for the binnacle area, maybe a 1'x1' piece. A...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

If there's a next time, guide coat between grits. If you started with 320 odds are good you didn't get all the 320 scratch out. Lets hope you were very thorough and vigorous with the higher grits. I...
