Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

I have to say that about double enders i agree with Bob Perry view on the subject (and given the number of boats he designed with double enders I would say he knows something about it):

"I could...

It is not only retro look is a bit retro designed (to go with the retro looks) but nothing that would count much to sail performance unless you want a performance boat.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Can you explain that a bit more? With wires it is just a direct system with hydraulics there are a lot more things that can fail.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

You should hear the man that had designed most canoe stern boats on the water, Bob Perry:

"... why did I make the Valiant 40 a double ender? Marketing! It was just assumed that offshore cruising...

Going back to pilot houses, some nice photos of the Futuna explorer 54 that has a hull very similar to other French aluminium voyage boats but has a somewhat different pilot house. ...

Except that the eyes on the twin wheel set up are not there but near the lifelines on the more outside and also that the wheelsman on the beamy two wheel boats is up on the air, while the one on the...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

From Berkemeyer this is the one that I like most, along the lines of Adventure 55 but with a more interesting interior with a deck saloon an chart table with full view around.

Huge storage and...

Not hull appendices:rolleyes:, Hull and appendices, meaning shape of the hull, keel and rudder.

Yes as you pointed out the modern Nauticat is more similar in what regards hull shape with the...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Regarding the Southerly versus the old designed Nauticat I am talking about the hull and appendices, not about the superstructures. Nothing fancy about that. Just efficiency in what regards sailing....

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

No I don't like it particularly but professionally I recognize quality in the design that in this case I don't think it has to do much with boats. The boat was not designed by Steve Jobs but by Steve...

More than by aesthetics those two boats are separated by several decades of yacht design evolution. Here the Southerly 49, a similar design and the Nauticat 515:

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

They were talking about harmonizing lines. Sure it can be done but the Nauticat 515 is not an harmonized boat (in what regards aesthetics) to my eyes.

Compare it for instance with the Southerly...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Being the RM faster downwind the waves will slap the boat with much less force (if at all). In fact the boat will be sailing at almost wave speed doing long surfs. I have heard about that the opinion...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Optionally they can have an outside layer(s) of kevlar. Many owners opt for that. The epoxy is used to saturate the marine plywood and make it completely waterproof.

One of the quote was from Glenans, probably the best world's sailing school (The RM 10.50 is a fast voyage boat) and they have one on their fleet of many different sailboats.

Regarding being...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

The boats that are designed to be beached have some sort of swing keel , lifting keel or board and they stay on their twin rudders, just for lateral balance.

Why should someone left a boat not...
