Most people protect their raw water system with a strainer in between the seacock and pump. That does figure into the equation along with it's placement.

Since the water lift muffler is way below the siphon break, there normally isn't any water between the siphon break and the muffler (that's the purpose of the break), hence the pump has to get the...

A siphon break 3 feet above the pump is 3 feet of head.

There is a strainer between the seacock and pump, normally above the waterline. Depending on the head caused by the siphon break, a worn pump may not prime without assistance.

It's more important if the strainer is above or below the waterline. Water nor air usually flow freely thru an impeller pump.

Did you open the seawater cock after installing the impeller?
