Re: Florida Mooring and Anchoring Pilot Program Survey

Sort of.

The pilot program is/was restricted to 5 locations, Miami didn't ask anything. It's not Miami that wants rules, it's one person with politicians in their pocket.

As much as I hate...

Re: Florida Mooring and Anchoring Pilot Program Survey

I disagree with you, but let me provide a basis for my thinking.

Those that manipulate politicians can't see guns, so that's not a good analogy. But they do see boats anchored in front of their...

Re: Florida Mooring and Anchoring Pilot Program Survey

I think you are mixing/confusing a couple of different topics.

1) AFAIK, Titusville mooring field is not part of the pilot program.

2) The Florida FWC is on the side of boaters! The FWC...

Re: Florida Mooring and Anchoring Pilot Program Survey

Looking at the number of boats using the mooring field compared to those at anchor around BKH, those at anchor seem to be in the minority. One can hoist all the negative connotations and hyperbole...

Re: Florida Mooring and Anchoring Pilot Program Survey

BKH is usually full during Feb. & March.

I believe the point is BKH (as an example) can now hold 226 boats on mooring balls, more than you can fit safely at anchor in the same amount of space. ...

Re: Florida Mooring and Anchoring Pilot Program Survey

Cruisers I speak with would, in general, rather be on a mooring than an over-crowded anchorage.

Some mooring fields are very successful, some not so much.

If cruisers don't like mooring fields,...

Re: Florida Mooring and Anchoring Pilot Program Survey

Florida state law limits municipalities from regulating anchoring. It's always been that way, but the code was ambiguous. As municipalities enacted their own ordinances and tried to enforce them,...

Re: Florida Mooring and Anchoring Pilot Program Survey

I'm missing the reason to 'offer' the insurance requirement.

A derelict boat won't have insurance.

What happens with a visiting vessel during the first 90 days prior to FL registration, do they...

Re: Florida Mooring and Anchoring Pilot Program Survey

You need to visit the ~9,000 island south of Marco, lots of camping.

Is that a prediction, or has that happened? I think it can't happen per the submerged land lease.

I get it, you...

Re: Florida Mooring and Anchoring Pilot Program Survey

Might be wrong, but it's legal. Not all laws are fair.

I still don't see how taking a piece of public waterway, improving it such that more can enjoy it is a bad thing. If the municipalities...

Re: Florida Mooring and Anchoring Pilot Program Survey

And you can't camp anymore in the middle of Marco Island like you could 50 years ago. Why? Because it's developed! Lots more people enjoying Marco Island today than did 50 years ago. I don't...

Re: Florida Mooring and Anchoring Pilot Program Survey

Hmm, Sarasota was 84% occupied in the first 6 months of operation. They decided to proceed to phase 2, doubling to size of mooring field. That would suggest there is demand...??

Re: Florida Mooring and Anchoring Pilot Program Survey

Who is "us"? I assume you are referring to the liveaboard community?

The fact that BKH has a waiting list every season for mooring balls suggests it's popular, at least among cruisers. I would...

Re: Florida Mooring and Anchoring Pilot Program Survey

I hope you filled out the survey and told them.

IMO, there are places for mooring fields and places where they don't belong.

I doubt that any of the mooring fields come close to making money.

Re: Florida Mooring and Anchoring Pilot Program Survey

Since the dinghy dock at BKH costs the same as a mooring ball, why would you anchor?

Apparently you don't spend much time around anchorages like Key West, lots of 'boogeyman' anchored, they're...

Re: Florida Mooring and Anchoring Pilot Program Survey

No doubt! Humans are well, human.

But we have to credit Alan Richard (now retired) in crafting the 2009 ordinance. Excerpts from that time.

All of the pilot area municipalities had...

Re: Florida Mooring and Anchoring Pilot Program Survey

Private moorings are very hard to come by in Florida. In order to install a mooring one must get a submerged land lease from the state, not an easy task. I haven't seen that many and I would guess...

Re: Florida Mooring and Anchoring Pilot Program Survey

Not true at all. The law doesn't pander to the condo commandos. The law is a 'give something to the boaters and in return you can exercise a limited amount of control'. With the exception of Boca...

Re: Florida Mooring and Anchoring Pilot Program Survey

Nice sentiment, but as with everything, there are 2 sides to the story.

Yes, I want to be able to anchor any/everywhere I want without landlubbers, who have never stepped foot on a boat, deciding...
