Re: MPPT Charge Controller for LifePO4 Batteries

Socaldmax, your friend has the right IDEA imo and he shares the same philosophy I do. I will eventually buy one reasonably priced MPPT controller for each panel. Rather than one extremely expensive...

Re: MPPT Charge Controller for LifePO4 Batteries

Thanks. Looks like reasonable adjustability. No temp comp for LA though? Also it does not really explain what triggers the changes from - bulk - absorb - float.

However it has everything...

Re: MPPT Charge Controller for LifePO4 Batteries

Do you know if the controller manual is available online?

Re: MPPT Charge Controller for LifePO4 Batteries

Looks decent! So you can adjust max voltages, absorption times, disable temp comp etc? Might be suitable for a lithium bank.

Re: MPPT Charge Controller for LifePO4 Batteries

Can you please tell us which cheap Chinese controller you used?

Re: MPPT Charge Controller for LifePO4 Batteries

That is a good and realistic test. :thumb: Do you have detailed results? How hot was it? The bench power supply test is good at showing what MPPT is capable of, but is not an indication of how it...

Re: MPPT Charge Controller for LifePO4 Batteries

That proof is a joke. Proof would require some solar panels. As terry says, VMP will be way lower in the real world due to heat.

Re: MPPT Charge Controller for LifePO4 Batteries

I don't get it Terry. What do you expect will happen when you turn the air con or HWS on with an MPPT controller going? Surely as long as it has the same max voltage setpoint it will increase...

Re: MPPT Charge Controller for LifePO4 Batteries

You guys talk of medium price controllers not having enough adjustability for lithium. If you can set the max voltage on the controller to 13.9V, then have a low voltage cutoff relay for the whole...

Re: MPPT Charge Controller for LifePO4 Batteries

That's pretty much why I went with PWM and 12V panels. When the time comes I will get individual controllers as I am sure price will come down

Re: MPPT Charge Controller for LifePO4 Batteries

Glad I could be of help!

BTW the panels I ended up going with are 4 x 200W 12V panels (18-22V).

My panels are rated to 11.1A @ 18V which is 200W. But the max current is still 11.1A at 13V...

Re: MPPT Charge Controller for LifePO4 Batteries

The whole point I am trying to make is that shading WILL be an issue on most boats. Therefore you WILL need separate controllers for the MPPT to work to its full potential. Of course MPPT will work...

Re: MPPT Charge Controller for LifePO4 Batteries

I decided that MPPT was not worth it at this stage and went with a single 60A PWM controller of this kind. I will be using it on my lead bank. I will have a go at disabling temp comp in...

Re: MPPT Charge Controller for LifePO4 Batteries

I just heard back from Morningstar. They say its fully adjustable. Still waiting to hear about the victron.

Also, what are the charging parameters for Winston cells? How do they compare to...

Re: MPPT Charge Controller for LifePO4 Batteries

Yeah. I would run individual cell voltage displays too. For under $2 why not. Self powered to as low as 2.7V. So if it turns off you know you are in trouble.

Re: MPPT Charge Controller for LifePO4 Batteries

Do you have any sort of BMS or are you just relying on the controller?

The controllers I am looking at have the same absorption as yours of 14.4, but float of 13.8. This might be satisfactory if...

Re: MPPT Charge Controller for LifePO4 Batteries

There is a prob with the manual I linked. The one I linked that has a lithium setting is the 50A version which was in the wrong section at outback marine.

This is for the 15A.

Re: MPPT Charge Controller for LifePO4 Batteries

I have no proof how much better tracking each panel separately would be, but it would appear impossible for one controller to do as good of a job as separate controllers unless the cheaper ones are...

Re: MPPT Charge Controller for LifePO4 Batteries

The more I look into this, the more I find a single "high quality" charger appears to not be the best option on a boat where some panels will likely be in the shade and others will not. An outback...

Thanks. I know all those advantages, and the sizing thing (AGM bank needs to be bigger etc). Hence why I am considering it even though the initial cost is so high. My cost comparison was there...

Re: MPPT Charge Controller for LifePO4 Batteries

I just done a cost comparison for a high quality lithium setup VS an AGM setup. Note I costed various AH banks. The lithium setup with good controller etc costs about twice as much, but will have...

Yeah I can't recommend it because I have not used it, but it seems to tick all the boxes. Not sure about pulsing though.
