Re: Tragic situation in Tasmania

I do the same thing. But over the past four years I have gone to bed and forgotten to turn it off at least three times. Each time could have been my last. So I want to install the solenoid I have...

Re: Tragic situation in Tasmania

At $90 I know exactly what unit you have then. I have the same detector/alarm and I too ruined a detector two years ago when I let the head get wet :nonono:

Two peas in a pod

I...

Re: Tragic situation in Tasmania

Where did you hear that Jim, I've been out all days so hasn't seen today's news.

Another way of looking at the scenario is that if the child had not become ill, we could be looking at four deaths...

Re: Tragic situation in Tasmania

I think that's wise Matt. Do you use any LPG gas items on board? If you do, I strongly recommend a gas detector of some kind. One which puts the censor down low.

Re: Tragic situation in Tasmania

Stop being so pedantic around the wording :whistling:

There are fire detectors which are used to detect 'fires' by the carbon monoxide produced by the fire. There generally put on walls, and...

Re: Tragic situation in Tasmania

Just a thought. Did you purchase CO gas detectors or CO fire detectors? Or combination of both?

It's just that a CO fire detector which are commonly purchased at hardware stores, won't detect...

Re: Tragic situation in Tasmania

Not sure if this is conjecture on behalf of reporters, but this mornings paper claims the generator was being used to power refrigeration.

Re: Tragic situation in Tasmania

A fair enough comment :thumb: I guess it's well publicised in this part of Australia because we have had a number of deaths over the past thirty years and we are relatively small.

Re: Tragic situation in Tasmania

I don't know about cookers without 'thermo couples' ?

You are right, CO will be produced by poorly maintained equipment such as a jet blocked. But in small amounts. If you take away fresh air...

Re: Tragic situation in Tasmania

You have astute observations :thumb: I apologise if I sounded like I was putting what you said down. I didn't mean to do that :flowers: just pointing out that we don't know as yet where they were...

Re: Tragic situation in Tasmania

And a word about LPG heaters, cookers etc.

The main danger with LPG is with the gas leaking after you turn the stove off. Which is why every boat should have an alarm detector for LPG/Butane and...

Re: Tragic situation in Tasmania

I think you guys are missing the point with this incident. The main lesson.

Yes, CO is dangerous and having a CO detector on board is a good idea. BUT, the lesson to learn here is NOT to have a...

You don't know that it was on the back. The police simply said it had a petrol genny on board.

Re: Tragic situation in Tasmania

If it's an LPG leak, it wouldn't be for a heater in this weather. It would be for a stove, oven or fridge. All of which can leak through the night.

For what ever reason though, it sounds like...

I'm really surprised you would say this. Whilst it is true statistically LPG gas leaks are few and far between (given the amount of installations across Australia), gas leaks are still way too...

Re: Tragic situation in Tasmania

The danger with LP is not when they are burning and being used. It's the failing to turn them off at the bottle and the item being used leak, e.g oven, fridge, heater (being three most common).

When a gas solenoid fails, does it automatically close the line, or can it fail in the open position.

So far, I have to go out to the bottle on my transum and turn the bottle off. I've at least...
