Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Oh to your other question -

Because we are charging to LA profiles and the black box controls LiFePO4 charging (by joining the banks). The black box measures the LiFePO4 voltage at the LiFePO4...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Yes, they are manual switches. Switches that are only changed when you go from one mode to another.

As John noted the common wisdom is to hardwire the Alt to a battery bank. And I do have my alt...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Continuing on with the block diagram I'm think of - I've added in some disconnects and such. Of course there are fuses and much more....

SD and HD are the obvious Start bank disconnect and house...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

In the Full(er) diagram that I am working on there are a bunch of LVC,HVC disconnects, Switches to isolate batteries and in general reconfigure to ones heart content.

Having the Starter switchable...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

John, Thanks to the reminder to follow the links. I'll read through that one soon. It does appear to be just what I was thinking.

Attached is a very basic block diagram of such a system. All of...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

OK, I went back and read the thread and see that I was posting here till (oh, um, ah) something happened to make me stop posting. I am still interested in the topic.

So let's see if I can throw...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Yes, quite, thanks. COTS stuff is good but a kickstart project would be nice too for a "full" system. (voltage, tail current, etc)

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

OK - you all got me thinking about this. I'll have to go back and re-read the thread and see if I want to reconfigure the charging setup.

Having the charging sources programmed for lead acid...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Science experiment sounds good to me (I am a research engineer after all).

I went ahead and ordered up some 18650 1100 mAh cells to destroy. It will be a week or so till they get here.

I'll...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

I have no doubt that the above quote is true. To what extent is the question.

How low for how long for what capacity loss. Does anyone have a paper they can point me to?

I think next time my...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Not hybrid in the sense used in this thread (which is why I listened more than talked).

And I should say that backup is not the same as failsafe (as in never fail).

Briefly my own power...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

In my case that small lead bank is the start battery (and actually the windless battery). Along with a single larger LiFePO4 main bank.

I'll be starting a new thread on where I am going with mine...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

In this and other threads I keep coming to the conclusion that we are trying to do 2 things with a BMS.

The first is the monitoring, warning and disconnect functions. In other words a protection...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

I may be in error or I may not be. Please do take the time to refute my assertions.

In regards to insults, none have been given, at least not by me.

I am here on this thread to learn something...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Oh and by the way. Perhaps you could address the point of my post i.e. Mailesails reasons for not consulting remotely rather than offering up the voltage sag strawman.

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Nobody assumed it. You postulated it.

You really should take some time to come up to speed with current technology. A number of your assertions assume that LiFePO4 will act like FLA. This...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

A quick look at Mainesails website shows:

Beyond all that we’ve had a LFP bank on our own boat since 2011. I am a huge fan of LFP banks, for many reasons, but I will not act as a “fan boy“, that...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

This is a non-starter.

In a properly designed LiFePO4 system the BMS will not disconnect the bank before it has warned the operator for some time.

In the case of over-voltage the BMS will...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

A bit off topic - In past years I wrote a model of an entire power grid. 12,000 miles of lines and every bushing, insulator, load break etc. This model produced a "Bottleneck" report that was (is?)...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

In regards to the original topic I came across a book that might be interesting to read.

I have not read it and do not have a copy (perhaps my library will pick up a copy).

The book is:
