Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Yes my boat has a scoop which was welded on by a previous owner. It's is quite flat, flatter than it would be if it faithfully followed the lines if the rest if the hull. It slaps horribly in light...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Borealis

Light sails and fuel. In high latitudes you don't need the former if you have enough of the latter.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Borealis

Just adding material with this not recommending lift keels.

In fact as previously stated I don't like them. An unballasted swinging centerboard that swings up into the ballasted part of the keel...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Borealis

Right I wasn't aboard then. Did the SG trip, think we saw you in Stanley when you were waiting for SOS; she came in with the S-shaped mast right after getting knocked down about 60 miles from us when...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Borealis

Can't get quote to work - but on swing keels
====
And yet movable keels are, it seems to me, a huge weak point in a place where you absolutely don't want a weak point, on a boat to be sailed far...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Yes I know: just pointing out that it's not as easy as many think. I saw some plans for a nice hydraulic locking keel in Cape Town last winter and I'm hopeful that it's been built and I hope I can...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Plumb bows, flatter fore underbody to accommodate shallow draught with lifting keel can lead to a boat the slams horribly upwind - very uncomfortable even gear breaking.

Not an easy compromise

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Impressive but Not the best test scenario though. Inshore with a known risk of grounding the keel should always be unlocked to allow it to lift. The real rest of a lifting keel system is a grounding...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

keel design:

Just a comment but it's a significant one in terms of keel design. A bulb keel, especially one that projects forward as well as aft of the fin is a recipe for disaster when sailing...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Fine if your not going to cry when the fishing boat runs down the side and scratches it ;) Or your climbing friend drags his crampons across something.

The OP wants an Ali boat it seems, which is...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Yes - the problem is that the mindset of most people is in short passages, maybe just hours of beating, or just a day or two. Anybody can stand it for a few hours to a few days.

They don't think...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Yes that's why I can't afford an expensive boat, cruising doesn't pay well :)

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Yes seen it... however that doesn't change my opinion or taste. To use a car analogy I'm more of a jeep or landrover guy over a BMW or Merc.. These things are not Jeeps or Landrovers no matter what...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Is that KM Pure another Dykstra design? Some nice stuff coming off his board and also out of that yard.

Pricey though. I'll never have that much coin and even if I did I doubt that I'd spend that...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Yes but they are running old boats in the main and can't be bothered to modify them I guess :)

Pelagic's helm is very exposed, I can attest to that, and originally there was no dodger at all just...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Or the south! But not really an issue as you are usually clothed in high latitudes and just need some sunscreen on your nose and to add a brim on your hat, provided it's no so windy that it blows...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

A high latitude boat must had a hard dodger or otherwise protected steering and watch-keeping position period.

This fold down dodger to reduce windage mantra is I'm afraid some leftover from days...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Good looking boat. I reckon a dodger would look on her and you know looks on a cruising boat must come second to comfort. I have to say that as I am the proud owner of a very functional yet ugly...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

I don't see the issue with these boards, they are simple and also work as drying legs apparently. More complexity than I would like sure but its a trade off with the other areas of these boats.

I...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

I've heard more or less the same onthe use of the dagger boards from Mr Boreal and his son and from the owner of the first Boreal 44 (it started as the second one but leapfrogged Juan San Bulan due...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Deck stepped masts - The big trade off is that all those lower shrouds really screw up your headsail sheeting angles. Often to get a boat with a deck stepped mast to sail close to the wind you have...

re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Boreal not Borealis but yes excellent boats and the best production high latitude ready boats that I have seen. The 48 is nice too, haven't seen any of the bigger ones yet if any have been launched. ...
