Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

It looks to me like a good sailing boat rather than a motor-sailer. I don't think it was designed primarily as a motor boat despite the twin engines and enormous tankage. Apart from those tow...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

It is an interesting design.

I don't think the windage is too bad. You are committed to some sort of a pilothouse anyway and it is quite low. When sailing into wind the heeled boat should...

Here's one that might fit the bill for Dockhead.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

I know what you are getting at and what the real purpose is. Sun Odyssey owners have quite a reputation:

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Gipsy Moth IV was reputedly very tender. I think in no small part because of the narrow beam. Not ideal really.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

I'm surprised how slow and how little progress is made with boat design. Nothing like the progress in car technology, where the progress is outstanding. Car tech piggy backs mainly off electronics...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

The earlier example you gave was such an extreme design it was almost a windsurfer.

This one is nearly a catamaran. So much of the stability comes from the form it might as well turn into one and...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Wow that's a big windsurfer.

I wonder if they have thought of doing away with the keel and hanging lead ballast off the windward rail on a trapeze, maybe supported by spinnaker poles (analogous...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

If you chose to fill the tank with your reserve diesel there would be no extra tankage. Likewise you could use drinking water. You couldn't benefit from running down your tanks though and still...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

You can get a cockpit view of that boat pushing through some moderate sized steep waves at the Needles in the video linked below. Gives a fair idea of how a bow will behave with a fine entry, low...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

As well as going faster by carrying more sail you can choose to sail with the same sail area at less heel for more comfort and less leeway with water ballast.

Just out of curiosity, I looked at...
