Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

IMHO, double enders are ugly but functional. The best eye candy were the old CCA designs. The plumb bow racing machines today also have their own beauty; but double enders? Nope. Had one for 30...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Perry road the double ended fad started in the 60s and jumped ship when that was no longer in fashion. Has nothing to do with seaworthiness, just marketing.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Polux posted some misunderstandings about double enders. Perry was not the first nor the most prolific designer of double ended boats. This design has been fairly standard among those nations...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Its mostly plug and play. Autopilot goes to the helm, helm to the hydraulic system, and you are done. Plus way less effort on the autopilot to "steer" with a hydraulic system. Its also safer to have...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Never had a powerboat that did not wander at low speed.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Think barn doors were replaced about 100 years ago with more streamlined versions. Size does matter if you are going downhill. But that is mostly how deep the rudder goes(its bite, so to speak) into...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

True, and important if you are racing, but for long distance cruising, most will be under auto pilot and hydraulic system way easier on the auto pilot system. Plus more reliable.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Got to agree about canoe sterns. We often wished we had more of a one. Downwind really comes in handy, especially in breaking following seas. tillers really are cumbersome once your boat is beyond 30...

Common sense would be my guess.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

From our actual experiences: 1. deck stepped mast went overboard in its entirety. Rigging kept it from sinking. 2. Keel stepped mast broke just above spreaders with the broken part sailing around the...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Intersecting wave trains, especially at shallow angles, can really create havoc with any type of boat. Not only will they produce unusually high waves, breaking at the intersection; but set the boat...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Sir Francis bemoaned the tenderness of GM4 and really did not like the way the boat sailed, but sailed it anyways. It was not only tender, but quick to do so; which peeved him to no end. But it was...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

At the other extreme is the old double ender English fishing trawler converted to sailboat. Big stand up pilothouse, comfy in all sea conditions, immense load capacity for LWL, easy to self steer,...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

If we had to do it all over again, would put some Go-Pro type cams on the mizzen mast to get a 360 cam view, then feed the view into the nav station so one can monitor without the risk of going...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Holding LWL constant, the wider the beam, the higher the boat will ride, the lessening of windward ability, and the stiffer the boat(may or may not be a good thing). Keeping LWL constant and...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Makes sense. Am use to pilothouses where folks can stand up inside, like the Fisher 37.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Dinky keel, twin rudders, light displacement, and shallow cockpit makes for a rough and potentially dangerous ride if used for long distance cruising. Doable but risky. One hits a lot of stuff out...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Yes and no. Tried looking through a plexi dome on a cal 30 that sailed the pacific. Dome was not high enough to allow full head room and thus only came up to my nose. Could only see a sliver of the...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

True, beavers need space. And boats nowadays are becoming vacation condos and of course mid afternoon places to hook up with your favorite pet, beaver or whatever. ;)

Whether it sails or not is...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

In the old days, boats were measured on the waterline-lwl. Then in the 60s boats began to be measured on deck-lod. Marketing wizs nowadays are talking about boats in terms of length overall--loa. ...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Then you probably would like the old English fishing trawler designs with upwards sloping plumb bows with little or no flair. Lots of reserve buoyancy and moderately fast for such heavy boats.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Yup. We had a clipper bowed boat once. That kind of bow does have "reserve" buoyancy but also means you are plowing a lot of water rather than making speed. If you are lifting water your boat energy...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Borealis

Keel step vs deck step raise a lot of discussions, but few if any about strengthening the mast. The loads on the mast seldom if ever involve shifting the mast's foot. The loads are placed on the...
