Re: Gasoline Generator Recommendations

So now I have a range of options to consider in order of increasing cost: High Output alternator, generator or solar array with the gold standard being solar. Much to think about.

Thank you for...

Re: Gasoline Generator Recommendations

Ya, buy once and be happy. If I go with a generator that is what I will do.

Re: Gasoline Generator Recommendations

That is something I wouldn't have thought of. Thanks! Isn't that always the way it is with boats. You fix one apparently small thing and it leads to other things that need to be done.

Re: Gasoline Generator Recommendations

Yes, I was considering that as well and it is a good point to keep in mind. Thanks for mentioning it. Often with so many choices we forget those that are easiest, and cheapest, to implement.

Re: Gasoline Generator Recommendations

Thanks for the picture. I was planning on doing something similar as per this photo which was provided to me by the shop who gave me a quote. In looking at the collection of panels I see I have a...

Re: Gasoline Generator Recommendations

I am surprised that one panel is sufficient, also that you haven't boiled your batteries but it is good to know. Anyway, thanks for sharing.

It seems kyocera is the panel of choice, eh?

Re: Gasoline Generator Recommendations

That is good to know. While a wind gen is not on any short term plans I wanted to keep it an option.
Question: I heard one wind gen in our marina a couple years ago. It was a blustery day and it...

Re: Gasoline Generator Recommendations

Does your wind gen help much? I have heard in the great lakes that wind generators would not provide enough juice because the wind isn't strong enough on a sustained basis.

Cool. That's what...

Re: Gasoline Generator Recommendations

That is a real testimonial. I like the bit about duct table holding it together... :)

Re: Gasoline Generator Recommendations

That would save me about $2000 (for a genny and new charger).:thumb:

Re: Gasoline Generator Recommendations

Would you say the extra you paid for all that power offsets (close enough) the need to not buy or run a genny?

Re: Gasoline Generator Recommendations

It sounds that a generator is still a good thing to have for those rainy days. That allows me to plan the overall upgrade: New batteries, charger and generator now and then the solar/wind when we...

Re: Gasoline Generator Recommendations

Excellent points. I was leaning toward the 60A but thought that 100A may be overkill. My guess is I will have a maximum of a 400Amp/Hour bank.

Re: Gasoline Generator Recommendations

Good point.

That is a idea if I could find a good used one.

Ya. And conversely, not having to run 100ft of extension cord to my boat and still not having enough to reach.:(

Re: Gasoline Generator Recommendations

Ya, it is. It is the list price so I suspect I may be able to get it for less if I shop around. Thanks for your comments.

Re: Gasoline Generator Recommendations

Yes, the 1000W currently has a list price of $999. If I went with a 40A charger it may work but the EU1000iKC2 is only rated at a maximum of 7.5AMP/120Vac versus the 7.8A/120Vac that the Xantrex...

Re: Gasoline Generator Recommendations

I have and old ProMariner ferroresonant of unknown vintage and output. My guess is it is 40AMP but that is a guess (it is installed in such a way that I can only see the name but not the rating). ...

Re: Gasoline Generator Recommendations

On another tack, I looked up the maximum input current requirement on a Xantrex TrueCharge. The 40AMP is rated at 9.0A load at 104Vac which is 936 watts (7.8A/120Vac) and the 60AMP is rated at...

Thank you All.
Is there anyone who has a generator who also has solar panels or other means to generate electricity? If so, how frequently do you use the generator?

Gasoline Generator Recommendations

Hello:

Although ideally I would like to install solar on my boat I am thinking that the overall system cost is not achievable this year. As such, I am considering a gas generator to bridge the...
