Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Cpa - Yes, nice to see you posting again. This was one of the more interesting & educational refit threads for me, especially when Minaret chimed in.

The gelcoat sure looks like it came out well!...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Thanks for the reminder of how you addressed your decks, CPA. As I watch my gelcoat steadily deteriorate, I'm still debating whether to use gelcoat or Awlgrip for the fix. I was initially sold on...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Hey CPA,

Loved the new pics, and good luck with the windlass installation.

You've completed so many jobs with your refit, I've now forgotten what you wound up going with to redo your decks! ...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

We were also told this when replacing the Sunbrella for our bimini several years ago, and so went with a dark color. The fabric still looks great and, who knows, maybe it's not as hot sitting under...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

That sounds like a great engine! I forgot -- did you guys repower as part of your refit? I've read nothing but positives on the Kubota-based Beta's. You may not yet have your mainsail, but at...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Congrats on the maiden voyage! I bet there were plenty of times in the past couple of years that you wondered if you'd ever get to enjoy this day.

8.3 kts. under engine power must be about your...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Pulling the mast is on the list, but not on the "A" list as of yet. Conventional wisdom says to pull it every few years and inspect the mast step, etc., but mine still looks pretty good.

My...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

OK, now it makes sense. Your pics & explanation will be a big help when it comes time to remove my own mast. I have also noted your series of pics, etc. where you removed the mast step apparatus,...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Yes, most helpful. Are there cotter pins or something otherwise providing stops on the ends of the pin to prevent it from working itself out? Not an issue under normal circumstances I'm sure, but...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

A photo would be great if you can swing it. Seems like good insurance for any keel-stepped mast, but maybe there's a good reason why a mfg. would leave it out.

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Sounds like a good tip. The commonly used polishes (e.g. Flitz, etc.) seem to both clean and leave enough of a residue to make the finish last awhile. I've become fond of 'Spotless Stainless' for...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

I have snap shackles for my spinnaker, staysail, & spare halyards, without incident. I suppose you could always wrap them with rigging tape or a wire-tie to be safe. My mainsail & jib/genoa have...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

CPA -- just out of curiosity, was/is your mast through-bolted where it is stepped? I don't think mine is, but I haven't pulled it yet. Is there any reason not to have it through-bolted?

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Hey, nothing wrong with some instant gratification, especially when it comes to these seemingly never-ending boat projects! Six hours sounds about right for polishing up all the stainless on my...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Yeah, well, sometimes on these long-term, Herculean-type projects you gotta keep the motivation up. New speakers are cheaper & offer more immediate gratification than a new main sail! Good thing...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

I'd say that if you are at the point of varnishing trim pieces, your boat refit project is definitely seeing daylight! Took me many years to get to the point where there weren't always more...

Btw, now that the mast is out, how does the mast step look? Need any attention?

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

This also may already have been mentioned, but what will you paint the mast & boom with? Awlgrip? From what I've read, it's critical to get the prep right when it comes to painting aluminum spars. ...

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Beautiful looking interior on your boat. I love the wood paneling on the main cabin ceiling. Not your typical teak & holly cabin sole, either. Do you know what type of wood?

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

I take it from your earlier comments that you'd opt for the Preval sprayer vs. brushing if doing again? Was all the (wet) sanding done by hand? I'm trying to find the time and muster the courage to...
