Re: LFP FLA hybrid

It is not too high for LFP charging unless you expect to set that as bulk and walk away. Before the battery reaches that voltage, the CAR will drop off to near zero and so the charge source can be...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Other ACRs may work differently than mine, but for the Blue Seas I have, you wire the house bank (LFP) to the default destination for charge current. When that bank reaches a fixed setpoint voltage,...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

The BMS doesn't shut off automatically unless a high or low voltage condition exists. It manually disconnects and isolates the bank by a disconnect switch on the BMS. The trigger to disconnect is...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

I do that with the BMS and an ACR. When the LFP is "full", as in CAR < 5% of C, the BMS gets switched off and this isolates the LFP bank from charge sources. I then use a Blue Seas ACR to manually...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

There are two layers of protection. First, yes, when taking the FLA offline via the ACR, I first switch to "manual combine". Second, the Balmar is programmed for a soft ramp so it doesn't kick in...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

I received a PM requesting that I describe our system, as it incorporates an LA battery as a component and it installed as close to a drop in system as I could have hoped for. So here 'tis with all...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Really? A LA battery is about 60% efficient in the taper phase of charging. So, if you have a "very large FLA" bank of oh, say, 1000 Ah, and the taper of the FLA is the last 150 amps, you need 250...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

I believe I suggested, lo these many posts ago, that the size of the LFP bank to do what was expected of it in the envisioned hybrid configuration was a great deal larger than folks were suggesting. ...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Given the different busses you have for technical and house loads, that seems like a workable solution. The BMS would provide the LVC and HVC switch noted.

Absent dual busses, I'm still...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

I have hydraulic thrusters, so avoid the big load they would place on the starter bank when I reach the dock after the LFP bank has been taken off line after charging. In my setup, if I had electric...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

With LFP, when the voltage drops below 13 v with a .1C discharge rate, you are approaching the lower knee. Why on earth would you want to hear motors slowing down, exposing PCBs to damage, as the...

No, it is not. My impression, from what he has written, is that he does not want to take responsibility for people's systems who don't bother to pay attention to his clear, and empirically derived...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Once again, and for at least the third time, could you provide the data that supports the idea that storing a LFP bank at 10% SoC is rational? You keep posting this recommendation, and I and others...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

The fuel tank analogy is how I describe the LFP mindset to others. Take out some energy, put some back in. Sometimes you put it all back, sometimes not, but the fuel tank doesn't care. The bigger...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

I'm sure you're right about the accountants/weekend boaters, but could we add lawyers to that list? :whistling:

IMO, Lithium probably makes no sense unless you spend a lot of time away from the...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

No John, that is not correct. It may be correct with LA, but not with LFP. When the acceptance rate of an LFP battery drops to near zero, it is full, regardless of the voltage you are charging the...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

On my 300 Ah Lithionics packages, the recommended max discharge rate is 1.3 C continuous and the recommended max charge rate is 1 C continuous. They don't manufacture their own cells, and the specs...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

They don't need to be recharged to 100%, ever. If you want them to be 100%, then you need to charge to 14.6 volts and at that point the BMS will start to shunt current from cells reaching that...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Not so sure about #1 above. My experience is that there is no tail at all for LFP. I've posted this before, but the below illustrates the point. Besides, LFP doesn't have PSoC issues, so even if...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Tend to agree. To use a Lithium battery to top off a LA bank means the Li bank needs to be large enough to provide the last 20% of capacity to the LA batteries, plus house loads during that process....

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

Thanks, that helps and I think I am starting to get the picture. Seems like the solution is predicated on using the least expensive wet cells you can get. Just based on my own experience and no...

Re: LFP FLA hybrid

I am having trouble understanding the advantages of this arrangement. It seems like a solution in search of a problem, although I guess it has the advantage of reducing the spend on Lithium at the...
