Increasing the mass moment of inertia should increase resistance to rolling. Your example of sail vs power boat of same displacement is probably true as most sailboats will have more weight further... |

I'd be interested in a discussion of roll period/damping/etc as it relates to comfort at anchor. Whether it's wake or surge, even relatively small waves can initiate wicked rolling on some boats.... |

Adding weight down low will certainly increase the area under the positive stability curve, but it doesn't necessarily improve motion or sea-kindliness: This doesn't just apply to 'modern'... |
