Re: Electric Propulsion on Catamarans

Obviously your powers of comprehension are lacking. Or you argue with other people without even reading their posts. Or you can't count.

Try this: 2 e-pod failures + 5 Torqeedo failures. 2+5.

Re: Electric Propulsion on Catamarans

Torqeedo had nothing bigger back then. And the e-pods were just junk.

Re: Electric Propulsion on Catamarans

No, it was a statement of FACT. There were FIVE failures of the Torqeedos. You seem to have been given the impression there were three.

I have no axe to grind. I've never owned a Torqeedo, and...

Re: Electric Propulsion on Catamarans

[QUOTE=yamez4u;1586101]What's to know you keep say absolutely stupid things. The number one item on any boat that could break and does break is a petro engine, maybe followed by head system failures....

Re: Electric Propulsion on Catamarans

If you knew anything about my past or my boat you know how absolutely stupid that post is. The abbreviation NFI could have been created just for you.

Re: Electric Propulsion on Catamarans

Actually, I don't think anyone was telling him that. He's a very intelligent man, 7 engine replacements in less than a year was more than enough evidence.

I actually wasn't even aware he was...

I'm actually in that photo, second from the left.

Interesting that's still on their website. Bryan asked that references to his boat be removed from it, when the motors were removed from his...

Re: Electric Propulsion on Catamarans

No, AFAIK, they don't have a blog or whatever. They are very good friends of ours, I spent most of the last 12 months rebuilding their boat with them, after it was extensively damaged in a cyclone.

Re: Electric Propulsion on Catamarans

I've seen the patrol boat in use. It operates around Sanctuary cove/ Hope Island. I should point out that it's a small pontoon type boat, maybe 5 metres long. It would be very light and easily...

Re: Electric Propulsion on Catamarans

According to Yanmar, the 53 horsepower 4Jh5 produces around 30 hp at the propshaft at 2000 rpm. I think most people would run them higher than 2000 too.

Re: Electric Propulsion on Catamarans

Not really true. Some petrol and diesel engines will run continuously at their rated power outputs - generator motors for instance. Marine engines can run at close to the rated max power...

Re: Electric Propulsion on Catamarans

48 volt is possibly safer in terms of electrocution, but will require huge amps. A 30kW motor at 48 volts will need 625 amps, at 300 volts it would only need 100.

Re: Electric Propulsion on Catamarans

Boat engines only run continuously at 1/4 to 1/3 throttle? Hasn't been my experience, with ANY boat motor, diesel or petrol outboard. Diesels in particular, like to work. In my experience at least...

Re: Electric Propulsion on Catamarans

Truck vs train comparison is largely due to very low rolling resistance of steel wheels on steel rails, and also due to the fact that railways have very few steep climbs, or tight corners compared to...

Re: Electric Propulsion on Catamarans

Except that 75% is probably optimistic for the solar. Unless you're in the tropics in summer. We have 800 Watts, and MPPT and rarely see 500 watts output, in subtropical Qld in winter, with perfect...

Re: Electric Propulsion on Catamarans

It's already (IMO) accepted that electric motors can do the job. But given that few cruising boats have nuclear reactors on board, it's where the POWER comes from to drive the motors that becomes...

Re: Electric Propulsion on Catamarans

It's not a knock down case, but it's almost certainly going to be heavier than just twin diesels. And more complicated. But if you were already going to have two diesels plus a genset, then probably...

Re: Electric Propulsion on Catamarans

I believe the submarines being discussed are in fact nuclear powered.

Anyway, I don't think anyone disputes that electric MOTORS can work. I think the area of debate is where the power to...

Re: Electric Propulsion on Catamarans

And of course a (maybe THE) major priority in submarine propulsion is quietness.

Certainly electric motors can be installed so they don't ever get exposed to seawater. As can diesels, petrol,...

So you reckon electrical equipment will work fine exposed to sea water? Good luck with that.

Re: Electric Propulsion on Catamarans

A diesel doesn't need an alternator to run. And if it can be hand started, it doesn't need a starter motor either.

Re: Electric Propulsion on Catamarans

How slow would you need to motor to only require 300 Whr per mile? 6 knots in Seawind 1000 would take about 5 kWhr.... enough gasoline to motor 35 miles at 6 knots would weigh somewhere around 15...

Re: Electric Propulsion on Catamarans

I'm not saying it can't be done, or that it won't work. All I've been saying is that Torqeedo is being highly optimistic when it says the cruise 4 matches a 10 hp outboard. It doesn't.
