Re: 12vdc Marine Computers

hey, gamayun, one more thing - those Panasonic touch screens say the input is 15V but they work just fine on plain old boat 12V. no need to worry about a power supply.

gamayun - you might also consider the MSI CUBI. comes in a choice of processors and starts barebones under $150. any of those will need mounting where the weather can't get to it.

i use a used...

Re: 12vdc Marine Computers

You're right, the 50w is at full brightness. That can be dimmed. In fact I seldom use full brightness. Nonetheless, it is a powerhog compared to sailors expectations. I've got twin diesels...

Re: 12vdc Marine Computers

fyi, my Lenovo won't run on 12V - needs the 19 per spec. I got a 12V charger that plugs into a cigarette lighter-type outlet. that works great and without an inverter and the power loss that gives.

rgleason:

In response to your question of whether I use the touchscreen function much, yes!

For navigation that's all I use. On both nRoute with Garmin blue charts and with OpenCPN.

Re: 12vdc Marine Computers

I've not measured power draw at lower brightness levels. sorry.

Re: 12vdc Marine Computers

VDL02 runs just fine on a straight 12V input from the house bank. So that's a range of 12V to 14.1V when the engine's running or the charger's on at dockside. BTW, the power input is a size n jack....

Again I believe in standard and simple. I use XP Pro. Drivers for everything I need, plenty of community support, standardization, all that. Keeps it simple and reliable.

Re: 12vdc Marine Computers

Personally, I love overkill solutions, so this is not to criticize but just to point out that navigation is a simple, undemanding task for a processor and graphics chip.

I run i7 and i3 boxes at...
