In a limited way it probably is training, but it is probably for a whole host of other reasons too, such as:

1) Limited accuracy of the maps as regards basic relative positions of items on the map...

The problem is that is no good way to get the data.

The only convenient way to get the data would be to look at groups of boats of boats traveling together for long periods.

For Lunars you need to see the moon and several other bodies, the son may be one of them but it is not mandatory.

By GPS time I meant the time that the machine uses which I assumed it would also display. Apparently I was wrong about that in the case of the GPS's you use. Do you know if there is a universal...

Wrong, total cost about $200. If this is a backup system, not a primary system you can get by with bottom of the line until you hit the next port and can make repairs.
