I think back then they were all pretty much ignorant of each others position most of the time.. comms were not to the standard of today back then..

It was the mental illness that made him step over the side.. he'd likely have done the same if he'd not tried cheating somewhere in the S Ocean.. a weak mind and open oceans are not compatible for...
